Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Combining classic heroic fantasy with a metaphysical twist, Malan (The Mirror Prince) introduces the Mercenary Brotherhood and two of its most fascinating members: Dhulyn Wolfshead, a psychically gifted former slave, and Parno Lionsmane, a rugged exiled nobleman. Their assignment seems simple: deliver Mar-eMar, a young orphan, to her distant relatives of the demi-royal Tenebro House in Imrion's capital, Gotterang. The trip quickly turns complicated and dangerous as they encounter the deadly persecution of the Marked, supernaturally talented people whom the fanatical New Believers think are trying to wake the Sleeping God and destroy the world. Parno must confront his noble past and Dhulyn fight the limitations of her visions as they battle the elusive, terrifying Green Shadow, who's manipulating the New Believers for his own ends. Malan's sometimes wordy, philosophical musings weigh down the action, but she makes up for it with abundant swordplay and the protagonists' strong, entertaining partnership. (Aug.)

Library Journal

As Mercenary Brothers, sworn partners until death, Parno Lionsmane and Dhulyn Wolfshead travel the land, hiring out their swords. When they arrive in the port city of Navra, they're just in time to save a family of "Finders" (people "marked" with the ability to find missing objects or people) from an angry crowd. They also learn of a cult of New Believers, led by a priest who claims that the Marked are conspiring to awaken the Sleeping God to destroy the world. Parno and Dhulyn set out on another mission to avoid the trouble in town only to find greater trials awaiting them. The author of The Mirror Princelaunches a new series of high fantasy and adventure with a hero and heroine cursed with secrets and blessed with natural and magical talents, wit, and bravery. Libraries interested in series sf may want to get in on the ground floor and add this title to their fantasy collections.

Meet the Author

Violette Malan lives in a nineteenth-century limestone farmhouse in southeastern Ontario with her husband. Born in Canada, Violette’s cultural background is half Spanish and half Polish, which makes it interesting at meal times. She has worked as a teacher of creative writing, English as a second language, Spanish, beginner’s French, and choreography for strippers. On occasion she’s been an administrative assistant and a carpenter’s helper. Her most unusual job was translating letters between lovers, one of whom spoke only English, the other only Spanish. She can be found at violettemalan.com.

The two Mercenary Brotherhood members, psychic Dhulyn Wolfshead and former noble Parno Lionsmane, are assigned a relatively simple task. They need to escort orphaned Mar-eMar to her royal relatives at Tenebro House in Gotterang, Imrion. --- The pair expects a quick trip with no issues. Instead the supernatural magical Marked have reasons known only to them to prevent them from succeeding. Meanwhile the zealous New Believers think that the Marked are conjuring a way to awaken the Sleeping God and consequently destroy the world. They too want Parno and Dhulyn stopped. None of these two groups of adversaries or the Mercenary Brotherhood is aware that the diabolical Green Shadow is playing everyone for a fool regardless Parno and Dhulyn know their mission could prove lethal, but they will continue to press forward in order to keep Mar safe until they can drop her off with her kin. --- This exciting sword and sorcery fantasy is fun to follow because of the camaraderie of the Mercenary Brotherhood tandem, who each knows to trust one another and no one else. Although somewhat typical of the sub-genre, the lead heroes and the diabolical Machiavellian Green Shadow bring freshness to a simple escort task that turns into a series of potentially deadly escapades as Violette Malan disproves that your enemy¿s enemy is your friend Dhulyn and Parno know first hand that their enemy¿s enemy is also their enemy. --- Harriet Klausner
