Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carolyn Dennette Michaels
What begins as a picture book about a perfect rose becomes a Biblical parable with classic ingredients: the grower, the bush with a single perfect bloom, and the invitation to display this beauty at royal court. An unworthy person seeks to share the rose, and the protagonist's kindness to this unworthy person become a parable when we see the beggar drawn as a Christ figure. Worried that the rose is not maturing, Baldrick makes the connection to the beggar, finds him along the road, and brings him home to share the family's meal. At the castle the rose opens when, somehow, it appears in the hands of the beggar-now clothed in courtly raiment. At last we see "the tender touch of the man's nail-scarred hands.'' The illustrations display the talents of a talented commercial illustrator and have the quality of chromo-lithographs.
