Barnes & Noble - Andrew Velez
Perhaps not since Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Hitchcock has there been so perfect a spookiness-making match of composer and director as Danny Elfman Men in Black, Good Will Hunting and Tim Burton. The orchestral and choral combination that Elfman used so brilliantly in scoring Burton's Edward Scissorhands -- not to mention Batman Returns and Mars Attacks! -- creates an edgy and darkly theatrical effect in Sleepy Hollow. For Burton's dreamy, faithfully adapted retelling of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Elfman masterfully conjures up a nocturnal tapestry of sound. Typical of his style is "Masbath's Terrible Death," where a passage with a single oboe is ...

Typical of his style is "Masbath's Terrible Death," where a passage with a single oboe is used ominously to usher in a full orchestra that rises to a near-grand operatic level of excitement. No less effective is "A Gift," gentle, dreamlike, and lyrical with a dark undertone. Another peak moment is "Tree of Death," which sets swirling violins against brass, drums, and eerie choral murmurings, highlighting Elfman's skill at evoking a grand, fantastical sound.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow reunites the distinctive director with his equally noteworthy musical collaborator, Danny Elfman. His orchestral score for the film features the mix of darkness and wonder that has graced Burton's previous films and other fantasy and horror movies like Army of Darkness and Dolores Claiborne. Much of Sleepy Hollow's score is grim and tense, using eerie strings, haunting vocals, and ominous brass and percussion to convey the supernatural suspense of Burton's version of Washington Irving's classic tale. However, Elfman also captures the ethereal, romantic side of the story on gentle woodwind and string pieces. A highly dramatic, evocative score, Sleepy Hollow may or may not be enjoyable listening outside of the film's context, but it definitely adds another level of depth to an already compelling movie.

    YOUR HEAD WILL ROLL

The score that Danny Elfman composed is one of his very best works, after I was blown away by his score for Batman, I thought nothing else could go beyond his batman composure. Sleepy Hollow is very eerie, and it makes you feel very good. You feel like your being swept away by your emotions, and taken off into a distant realm.

Is Elfman reworking melody from Foster's Beautiful Dreamer?

Towards the end of the film (after you have heard the incidental themes a couple times), I thought I was hearing a reworking of the main melody from Beautiful Dreamer (waken to me) in a couple of different scenes. But I'm not sure if it's just my imagination. Anyone know how to find out? Anyone have Danny's phone or email?

    Sleepy Hollow [Original Score]

The soundtrack is extremly worth buying and worth your time. I listen to it just about everyday for about 5 or 6 months, about 3 times per day. It really relaxes you too. And if you've seen the movie, even if your memeory bites, you could actually visualize every scene. You have to buy it. I definnetly recomend it.
