PreS Up

This beautifully produced pair of book/CD kits takes the best of America's folk music and reinterprets it for children. The songs are highlighted three times: first, for listening, with the lyrics laid out on one or two attractively illustrated pages, then with the guitar chords, and, finally, with a short history or story about its origins. In Folk Songs , the selections include "Skip to My Lou," "The Fox," "The Cruel War," and "I've Been Workin' on the Railroad." Sleepytime contains traditional lullabies such as "All Through the Night" and "Brahms Lullaby" and some unexpected choices as well, such as "Ole Blue" and "On Top of Old Smokey." Widener's acrylic paintings are expansive and gorgeous, but the CDs are the real treasure here. All 12 songs are performed by Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary fame) and his daughter Bethany. Father and daughter blend their voices as they interpret and tell the story of each song. These classics are designed for listeners and singers alike to enjoy. Share these collections with children of all ages.-Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY

I GREW UP LISTENING TO PP$M AND I STILL GO TO THE CD CASE AND PLAY THEM ON A REGULAR BASIS, MY YOUNGEST CHILD IS 5 AND WILL BE 6 ON 1-17 AND I PURCHASED THIS BOOK AND CD FOR HER B-DAY. I'VE ALREADY CHECKED IT OUT AND CAN'T WAIT TO GIVE IT TO HER. SHE ALREADY LISTENS TO MY CD AND LOVES THE MUSIC. I'M GOING TO GET "PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON" FOR HER TODAY AND I JUST CAN'T WAIT SHE LOVES TO READ AND HAVE ME READ TO HER. I AM SO EXCITED

the cd that comes with this book has been playing nightly in our boys' bedroom (they're now 2 1/2 and 4) for more than a year. the songs are great lullabies, soft voices with soothing guitar instrumentation. there are classic folk songs that you can sing along to, and ones i didn't know but learned about through notes (for the grownups) that light on different aspects of american history (some very sad and moving, actually). the pictures are beautiful and you can really spend the whole length of the song with each one. the page for "the water is wide" always takes my breath away (it's one of my favorite songs, too). the fact that my son started singing "Kum Ba Ya" in public when he was 18 months was just a bonus. if you respond at all to american folk songs (and the voice of peter yarrow) and want to pass them on to your young children, there's no better way than with this book/cd combo.

Beautiful voices and a lovely choice of songs with the exception of Ol' Blue which is quite fast and not suitable for sleepytime (thus my 4 stars rather than 5). Otherwise a lovely CD with alternative children's songs. Very relaxing. The song book is lovely and has melody and chords. I think the price very reasonable.

My 6 week old granddaughter seemed quite relaxed listening to the music and to her grammy reading this story to her. Highly recommend it! Definitely will get another songbook by Peter Yarrow.

both my children - ages 3 and 10 months - LOVE this music. The CD is well produced - crisp, clear sound with beautiful voices. Relaxes my children almost instantly. The accompanying book is nicely illustrated, but the songs are long and the words not necessarily stories that engage young children in the written form as much as in song. But this is a fabulous CD, I'm online to buy more children's music from this fabulous duo.
