Overview

From the #1 cozy mystery bestselling author of The Southern Pasta Shop Mysteries comes a new series that proves blood can be thicker than water...

As a young single parent, Mackenzie Elizabeth Taylor has struggled to provide for her teenage daughter. She finally catches a break when she inherits half of an apartment building in Boston from her uncle Al...along with his P.I. business. So what if she doesn't know the first thing about investigation or if their hot-but-crabby downstairs tenant is a police detective who's looking for any excuse to handcuff her? Her daughter, Mac the computer whiz, has her back. And these two girls don't know the meaning of the word quit-not even when their first case takes an unexpected turn.

The man Mackenzie's been hired to follow in a custody case seems to have upset more than just her client when she spies another person tailing him-a mysterious man Mackenzie would bet is up to no good. But when her mark suddenly winds up dead, and her first and only client is accused of his murder, Mackenzie vows to find the truth. Only one problem: she doesn't know where to start...or when to draw the line. Who is the mysterious man she spotted tailing the victim? Is he the killer? Is she in over her head, or will she uncover the secrets someone killed to keep hidden? Mackenzie and Mackenzie are on the case, and the world of private investigation will never be the same.

I am a huge fan of Jennifer L. Hart. I love her Laundry Hag and Damaged Goods series and I've read them multiple times. She knows how to spin a good story and create memorable characters. In this new series, she has upped the ante. I think this is her best work. If you are a fan of the Gilmore Girls, you'll love the two MacKenzies. This mother and daughter have the same type of relationship that Lorelei and Rory Gilmore have and that includes the clever banter. Sleuthing for a Living has mystery, a budding romance, witty dialog, and well defined characters that come alive on the pages. Read this and then go read her other series. You'll enjoy hours of entertainment.

What a delightful beginning to what I hope is a new series by Jennifer L. Hart. Mackenzie Elizabeth Taylor is a single mother raising her 16-year-old daughter – Mackenzie Elizabeth Taylor (otherwise known as Mac) or as Mackenzie calls her, Mackenzie Elizabeth Taylor 2.0. Mackenzie is living in Boston and has found out that she is totally unskilled for every position that she applies (at least that is what they tell her). Luckily she has inherited half of her Uncle’s apartment building (along with her mother Agnes) so that she and Mac have a place to live. In the apartment she discovers a book written by her Uncle and realizes that her Uncle was a P.I. – so she decides that she will become a P.I. as well, using his book as a mentor. And the fun begins! All of the characters are so likeable and engaging that you fall in love with them and the story as Mackenzie works to solve her first case. Mackenzie’s tenants are a detective, an older Jewish lady, and her mother who separates from Mackenzie’s father and moves into the last unit. I highly recommend “Sleuthing for a Living” if you like romance and comedy with your mystery. I sincerely hope there is a book #2. I did receive a free copy of this book in return for an honest and fair review. (by paytonpuppy)

This is the first book in a new series and is now one of my favorites. I fell in love with the characters and the plot in the very beginning. Something about this series just captured my attention. Kudos for Mackenzie for following her dream and trying to be a Private Investigator. Mac, her daughter, is amazingly smart. Her Mom and her neighbor Nona are quite the characters along with her handsome neighbor and Police Detective Hunter Black. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.

This one has it all: broke semiskilled single mom with a mother a lot like Cruella deVille, hot cop, ex boyfriend, mentoring uncle (even though he's dead), several murders. Sure, there are a few inconsistencies and a wishful thinking, but IT'S FICTION. Nice plot management and twists, a real snarkfest, and classic redheaded behavior (cut the growling, I was born a redhead and have the freckles to prove it!). Nice touch of having supposed pearls of wisdom from Uncle Al's book on sleuthing for a living at the beginning of each chapter. Certainly leaves this reader panting for the next in series. Oh, and no erotica (for those who care).

This is a laugh out loud funny book!!! The mystery is believable, the people are well thought out and enough backstory that you know them. I will say that Mackenzie needs to grow up a bit. She is funny, but some of the stuff she says and does with her daughter makes her seem like she is trying too hard. Toward the end of the book she sorts out a bit though. I loved her employer Len, he is a sweet old man. I also like Hunter, he is a good soul.

There is mystery, some romance, likeable characters, and this is an enjoyable debut mystery series. I look forward to the next book in the series!

Loved it from beginning to end.  The family dynamic works well, with the three generations coming together when the chips are down!  Also enjoyed the neighbors and employer that blend  right in.  Really kept my interest, and the brain cells going trying to determine the murderer....totally surprised in the ending!!   Enjoy, I did : )

Uncle Al left his estate to Mackenzie and her mother. Mackenzie and her daughter, Mac, who was Mackenzie Elizabeth Mackenzie 2 arrived to move into their apartment. When they arrived, there was someone wandering through their apartment with a flashlight. Mackenzie arms herself with pepper spray and sneaks up on the intruder. He is trying to explain why he is there and who he is when she hears her daughter call her name. He reaches in his jacket and she tells him to stop. In the confusion When everyone finally leaves, Mackenzie is getting ready to take a shower when she spots a book over the mirror. It is a Working Man's Guide to Sleuthing For A Living by Albert Taylor, PI. This book is going to turn Mackenzie's world upside down! Jennifer L Hart has written a delightful cozy mystery. Mackenzie who grew up faster than she wanted to and Mac who is a very mature teenager along with the cast of supporting characters are simply delightful. The story moves fas and twists and turns until the very end. This a book to be enjoyed and is so hard to put down.

This is the first of a new series – off to a great start. Mackenzie Elizabeth Taylor inherits her Uncle Al’s apartment and his belongings with her Mother (Uncle Al and Mackenzie’s Dad had some issues so he decided to leave his estate to his daughter and wife). Mackenzie is the mother of Mac (Mackenzie Elizabeth Taylor the 2nd ) a smart and good natured teen. Mackenzie had Mac at the tender age of 16 and has been struggling to find a career for some time, that is until she finds Uncle Al’s book on how to be a detective. Then the fun begins. Did I say one of Mackenzie’s tenants happens to be a hot cop who has a thing for her and vice versa. Of course things do not go as smoothly as Mackenzie thinks and her first case turns from a custody case to a murder. This is a quick read with lots of humor. The dialogue between Mackenzie and Mac is priceless. Don’t want to give away too much of the plot. Highly recommend.

Amazing story! Hello Mac and MacKenzie and welcome to the Heart of Harts! Jennifer L. Hart has outdone herself this time. Her talent just seems to improve with each book she writes. There's sleuthing and family time and sleuthing and a new romantic interest and sleuthing and an old romantic interest and ... Did I mention sleuthing about a case that Mac needs to crack? This is the beginning of her career as a P.I. She takes on the profession as a P.I. after her P.I. uncle dies. She also co-inherits the building that he owned and his car. Fumbling along because she really doesn't know if what she is doing is going to produce the right results, she uncovers clue after clue and you will have to read the book to find out what happens. You'll meet her daughter, Mackenzie, as well as Mac's father and mother, the new boss, the elderly and motherly lady who lives upstairs and the hot cop who also lives in her building and a few other pertinent characters. I really enjoyed this story and I am very sure you will too. I received this advance copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
