Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This smorgasbord of organic recipes, tips and suggestions has something for everyone, but like a Jack-of-all-trades, it's a master of none. With an emphasis on food, from gardening and buying to preserving and preparing, it also covers household hints on such subjects as conservation (turn down the thermostat), safe cleaning products (baking soda) and the three R's of green living: reduce, reuse and recycle, with recipes for such products as baby food, sauerkraut and exfoliating skin scrub. Some of these slices of organic living are appealing and accessible, like instructions for growing potted herbs, making compost and drying tomatoes. Others, like the information on renewable energy and keeping honey bees, are too sketchy to be of real use. The six pages devoted to raising pigs (with one entire page on selecting your breeds) borders on the absurd for most people. The selections are randomly ordered, with churning butter next to "Make Organic Drinks." Profusely illustrated, the book may make an inspiring gift for those wishing to make their lives greener, but it's apt to frustrate and confuse novices trying out "organic," and those seeking in-depth information will have to look elsewhere. Well designed

Small and large changes are outlined for everyday living. This book is more than a slice of organic life, it describes the many slices to make a whole life. From gardening, to harvesting, to natural clothing, to healthy cleaning, and preservation of foods, and resources. Good book.

Work with nature, not against it

A Slice of Organic Life Edited by Sheherazade Goldsmith You don¿t have to live in the countryside, spend a lot of money, vote Green or be a vegetarian to be just a little bit more aware of our fragile environment, and to do your bit to lead a lifestyle that is thoughtful and working with nature rather than against it ¿ this is the message imparted in 352 pages of ideas and suggestions. The title describes the book perfectly ¿ ¿slices¿ of organic life. You can take from the book what suits you ¿ as many slices as you can handle, and there is always the opportunity to return and take another slice when you can manage it. It is beautifully illustrated with photography by Peter Anderson with subjects to suit someone living in an apartment through to those on a small lifestyle property or small holding. I thought I would list a few of my favourite slices but I can¿t single any out ¿ instead I ponder on which idea I will set in motion to change a daily habit that I know will ultimate simplify and enrich my life and that of my family.

Turn on to an Orgainic Lifestyle

This is a beautiful book, filled with luscious photographs. It is divided into three parts: Projects without a yard Projects with a roof terrace, patio or tiny yard Projects with lots of space Appropriate recipes and tips accompany each section. For example, for projects without a yard, there are recipes to make organic baby food, how to save energy and how to bake bread. The third section discusses the raising of farm animals, like cows, goats, pigs and ducks, and is accompanied with lovely photographs. This book is eye candy for the green wannabe or green farm wannabe. It is a great gift for the novice, as the photographs evoke images of the perfect green lifestyle and make a strong call to change our unsustainable ways. For many readers already living a green lifestyle in an apartment or the suburbs, the third section represents the dream of a simpler, more rustic farming lifestyle. There are useful tips and nice recipes a Slice of the Organic Life is a good starting point to greener living. The beautiful photographs are the strong point, however. Serious lifestyle changes would require additional knowledge to what this book offers. Author of the award winning book, Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet
