CHAPTER 1 A Tale of Two Kendras

“So you’ll be naked?”

“Well, I’ll be painted,” I corrected Zack, my live-in boyfriend.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know, but I’m sure it will be fine.”

I wasn’t sure spending an evening as a painted girl at Hugh Hefner’s seventy-eighth birthday party would actually be fine, but I was hoping it would turn out to be. At the very least, I would make a couple hundred dollars, meet some cool people, and get a chance to check out the Playboy Mansion. How could I turn that down?

And besides, it was Zack who had initiated the whole thing. He’d taken me to the car show where a photographer had said he wanted to set up a photo shoot with me, and at the time Zack was all for it. So it seemed totally logical that when the photographer posted the photos on One Model Place—a sort of MySpace for models—if any work came from it, Zack would support me.

Well, the photographer posted the photos, and that same day a guy named Mark called from Playboy and asked about me.

The truth is, I wasn’t exactly sure what the Playboy Mansion was—or who Hugh Hefner was, for that matter. I knew about the bunny; I had an uncle who worked at the Playboy Club in Atlantic City, and he would send my brother and me T-shirts and sweatshirts with the bunny on them when we were kids. I’d wear them to school and all the kids would tease me and say Playboy was gross, but I thought it was cool.

Beyond that, I didn’t know much about Playboy. But I knew enough to know that getting a phone call from someone who worked there could be the beginning of something big.

Mark’s first call wasn’t guaranteed to lead to anything. He mentioned that he was looking for girls to work at Hef’s upcoming birthday party. I figured Playboy had a lot of models to choose from for the party, and it was a long shot. But a couple of days later Mark called back.

“Mr. Hefner saw a photo of you and wants to call you personally,” he told me. “I gave him your number, so expect a call.”

I was stunned. “What are you talking about? Expect a call? Why?” I was weirded out by the whole thing. Why would he want to call me?

“Listen,” Mark said. “He only likes girls in college, so tell him you go to college.”

I said okay and hung up, confused.

The next day I was in the shower when the phone rang. I hopped out and saw that the call was from a 310 number. That’s L.A. I was eighteen years old and lived in San Diego. Who did I know in L.A.?

“Hello?” I answered.

“Hello, is this Kendra?”

“Who is this?”

“This is Hugh Hefner.”

“Yeah, right,” I said, thinking it was a prank call. “Shut the fuck up.”

It wasn’t a prank.

“I look forward to seeing you at my birthday,” he said. “Also, I’d like you to consider being my girlfriend.”

Still dripping wet from the shower, I stood there in shock. I didn’t know how to respond. After all, I had just told Hugh Hefner to shut the fuck up. That probably wasn’t the reaction he’d expected. I brushed off the girlfriend thing, since I had no idea what that even meant. When I finally collected my thoughts, I told him I would see him at his birthday party.

Just as I was wrapping up the conversation, Zack walked into the bathroom to find out who I was talking to. After I filled him in, he was as shocked as I was, and clearly a little worried.

“I want to drive you up there,” he said protectively.

When the big day arrived, I was kind of nervous. During the car ride Zack questioned me about how I was going to handle being invited to be Hef’s girlfriend, but I didn’t have an answer for him. Even though I googled Hef after we spoke on the phone, I couldn’t really imagine what it might mean to be his girlfriend.

After a two-hour drive, Zack and I arrived at the gates of the Playboy Mansion in Bel Air. We buzzed security, who let us inside, and Zack pulled the car right up to the side entrance of the Mansion.

“Be good,” he said as I opened the car door.

“Whatever,” I mumbled back, barely even paying attention to him.

It was hard to focus once I got a good look at the Mansion. I was amazed at what I saw. Everything was so big and beautiful, and like nothing I had ever seen before. After all, I was a Hollywood virgin. Not that kind of virgin but, you know, still a little naive.

I got out of the car and was immediately escorted to the gym by security. I rushed by other girls and a handful of workers, and once inside the gym, Mark, who was the talent scout and body painter, told me to take off my clothes.

“Where’s Hugh Hefner?” I asked as I stripped down.

“He never comes down here,” Mark told me.

That sucks! I thought. I wanted to meet him and find out what he was all about.

Mark and his wife started painting me and putting rhinestones all over my body. It was all very weird. Then they moved away from my boobs and focused on my hair and makeup. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. It was my first time ever having my hair and makeup done professionally, and I thought I looked like a drag queen.

Just as they were finishing making me a naked she-man, Hef—breaking his usual rule of staying out of the painted girls’ room—came inside. He introduced himself and gave me a hug.

My heart was racing. “I’ve never met a celebrity before in my life,” I said. “You are the first. This is the coolest thing.”

It really was.

Hef laughed and we talked a little bit about the night. He told me not to be nervous and invited me to stop by his table. The conversation was short and sweet. He was very charming; he had a powerful way about him, and I liked it.

“I’ll see you upstairs,” he said with a smile before disappearing into the night.

For those few minutes with him I forgot that I looked like a clown. A naked clown. I felt special. After all, the staff probably went through thousands of photos to find about ten painted girls, and out of those ten, Hef singled me out. The man who had created this whole world chose me. That felt really good.

At the party I served Jell-O shots to celebrities like Jack Nicholson, Pauly Shore, Donovan McNabb, Fred Durst, and Brooke Burke. I was starstruck, but I didn’t act like it. I simply went up to Brooke Burke, gave her a Jell-O shot, and politely told her that I loved her. I was cool like that.

The night ended up being a lot of fun. Being practically naked was not a big deal for me, and after a while I forgot that I didn’t like my hair and makeup.

Then Mark came up to me and told me to bring some Jell-O shots to Hef’s table.

“Are you sure?” I asked nervously after glancing at Hef’s table, which was packed with beautiful women.

As I inched my way toward the group, Hef and I locked eyes. I smiled. He was with his girlfriends, including Holly and Bridget—who I didn’t know at the time—and a bunch of Barbie look-alikes, but he kept looking at me. I offered them shots and hung around the table the rest of the night. Maybe I was paranoid, but I thought the girls were giving me dirty looks the whole time, and with my eyes I tried to tell them I ain’t trying to steal your man, but I wasn’t quite sure if the message was received.

The whole evening, Hef and I kept staring at each other. It wasn’t a physical attraction for me, but he was just so cool. The way he acted and the things he said were unlike anything I had seen or heard before.

At the end of the night Hef came up to me, gave me a key, and asked me to stay the night. I couldn’t—mainly because Zack was sitting outside the Mansion in his car, but beyond that, I felt that being there that night was a job, and I wanted to keep it that way. Clock in. Clock out.

I gave him the key back but told him I would see him again soon.

“Will you be my girlfriend?” he asked again before I left.

Staring into his eyes, I didn’t see a man four times my age with ten times more girlfriends than most. Even though I hardly knew him yet, I saw a sweet man who made me feel really good about myself—a true gentleman. It was weird but in my heart, I felt like he was someone I could possibly trust.

“So, will you?”

There was only one thing I could say: “Um, okay.”

That night my life changed. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but something just felt right about it. Hef didn’t offer me money or tell me he was going to make me a star. He didn’t say anything, because truthfully that wasn’t the deal. He wasn’t trying to offer me anything other than him (and maybe a pretty cool home).

I liked what I saw at the Mansion and, more important, I liked what I saw in Hef. He was a good guy with good intentions, and in a short period of time I was able to understand that about him, so I was willing to take a risk and uproot my entire life.

I don’t know if many girls would do that on a whim. Such an offer would scare some girls, and others might look at Hef and see dollar signs and jump at the chance to do whatever he said. I didn’t care about that at all. Looking into Hef’s eyes I knew there was nothing to fear, and mansion or no mansion, I was drawn to him in a way that I had never been drawn to a man before.

I couldn’t put my finger on it, but something about that night felt so right. A new life was definitely beginning, and I was not going to stop it from happening.

As you probably know, I became Hef’s girlfriend, moved into the Mansion full-time, and a year later began filming the hit show The Girls Next Door.

I was labeled the sporty party girl of the bunch, and while I didn’t like being labeled, I certainly had a good time living up to the character the producers wanted me to play.

Life has really worked out for me. Maybe it was luck or maybe fate, but I’m pretty blessed to be in the situation I’m in today.

While the show may have opened the door to a charmed life and eventually helped me discover what I really wanted, the reality is, it didn’t come easy. I wasn’t just sitting around deciding which family business to take over when I got that call from Hef. I didn’t just trade in one perfect life for another. It’s been an uphill battle, and while life is great—almost perfect, even—right now, before I can talk about the best of times, I need to tell you about the worst . . .

    Fantasy

    This book should have a parental advisory label, or not be allowed to be purchased by anyone under the age of 18. I cannot see that it would be helpful to young people of any age, and the information Ms. Wilkinson fills the pages with is so contradictory and confusing that I have to wonder if any of this autobiograhy is real at all. For years we have been hearing how she was a dental assistant in San Diego before being "discovered" by Hugh Hefner, now we hear she was a stripper using drugs. For years we have been told that her father left when she was three, then four, then eight, and now somewhere between the ages of 13 and 14. The list just goes on. Frankly how anyone could presume to write an "autobiography" at the age of 25 is ludicrous. Ms. Wilkinson's personal story (fantasy), unfortunately leaves me with the feeling that young people, girls in particular, will see her crazy life as the ticket to fame and fortune. I only wish someone, anyone would have actually done the research to find out what the facts are about her life before putting this book to print. The information that has been put together by Ms. Wilkinson's media machine is clearly a salacious attempt to titillate the masses only for profit.

    Great Read. Real Girl. Detailed earlier life.

    Loved the book. Read it in less than a day. Great insight at the girl behind the camera. Great insight onto the road that lead her to the girl, wife, and mother she is today. about her feelings and how she dealt with the struggles of her life. Less detail about the Playboy years but yet you still won't be disappointed. Cute about learning about her current life but not that much. I hope she does a second book. Overall great read.

    Disappointing

    I'm not sure what I expected out of this book, but I was disappointed. 1, the book was too short. I finished it in less than 24 hours (and not because it was riveting). 2, Kendra still seems to be making excuses for her prior drug use as well as other aspects of her life. At one point, her and her boyfriend argue over her flashing her boobs to cameras and people in clubs, and she actually says "I swear on my life I had to [flash]!". And in regards to her drug use, she claims she wasn't addicted but just "really, really liked" how she felt high. While it seems like she's on the right path, she still has a lot of learning and growing up to do before she reflects back on her life.

    loved, loved, loved!

    It's as clear as this, if you don't like Kendra then don't pick up the book. It seems to me that some people only pick up the book to criticize. She used to be a playboy bunny! You should have some idea what was going on in that mansion! So if you're so disgusted by that alone then why bother to read the book? I read this book in one day because I could not put this down! I gave it to three other people to read who finished it within three days and also loved the book! Maybe it's because I am a teenager and am used to hearing these things more than other generations. Also alot of other reviewers are questioning whether or not this story was true. If you watch her show she tells her ghost writer what to write! She reads it and revises it with him! So if you're a teenage girl or someone who just loves Kendra I advise you to read it! Trust me, my copy of Sliding Into Home is not in the trash bin, it's floating around between friends.

    Waste of time, paper and ink

    I read this book at the ER while waiting with a friend. It truly was all that was available. She's a fairly brainless, shallow girl who seems as though she's looking for validation. I'm sure she'll be validated by some, but she is a prime example of the dumbing down of young people. I hope any young girls that read this are mature enough to understand that only 1 in million girls grab the money that she has without an education. Far better to stay in school. I can't help but feel that this book is nothing but a justification for her drug use and her flashing her naked self all over, as it was her only way out. Too bad she never learned how to think and use her brain. She comes off sounding like trailer trash. I never watched her show, but if it's as dumbed down as this book, no wonder we have so many out of work with no skills.

    I was impressed!

    At first I was not sure if I wanted to read this book, but I took a chance.. and glad I did. This book was easy to read, and have a great back story of the life and childhood of Kendra Wilkinson. I view her in a totally different light now, and she's way more then what you see on TV! I would recommend this book to anyone!

    Total let down, waste of my time

    Having watched The Girls Next Door ,I always thought that Kendra's dumbness was just a act for good t.v. ..however after reading her book I realized that it's not a act! It's sad too see how she gives girls the false idea that if you look beautiful, then anything is possible,even if you are a drug abuser,who has no education,and no morals...it's ok because your looks will get you anywhere. I feel sorry for her husband,this book is a joke and so is she!

    Honest

    I hesitated buying this book because I thought it wouldn't be that good, but it is very well written and it's as if she's saying it to you! She is honest about her past and yes she's 25, but had more experiences and made more mistakes than most people have that are 40, so that said don't judge someone who's open and honest with their mistakes-we all can learn from then if we are willing. I read this book in a few days;would have read sooner but I work full time. I have friends who asked to borrow after I was done. Can't wait for the next book.

    Very Honest

    I think this book was good some people cant accept the fact that she is a real person all people want to read is about these Hollywood stars and how people lives were always aw so bright when sometimes there are people out there who lives wasnt a freaking white picket fence until some people can be open to others and STOP BEING SO JUDGMENTAL then maybe people can get somewhere. I think people are hating on her and jealous of her life so I say Go KENDRA and keep doing your thing and there are going to be hateful people who want to see her fail and be unsuccessful but I really enjoyed the book and I think its a good lesson and I think young these days are doing far worse than what Kendra did I bet the people who talking crap their daughters watch Kendra and are doing more than what their parents can imagine and I am a grown women and as women instead of down grading one another we need to be more uplifted to others (shaking my head) Its a shame how people can be!

    STOP Being so HATEFUL

    I wish the people out there that didn't enjoy Kendra's life story (up to this point in her life anyway) would stop being negative and let the people out there read the book without first reading your comment telling them "not to waste their money" . Many reviews were totally out of line and incorrect. Kendra's father left more than once, and that is why there are different AGES that he left- so who ever it was that wrote about that can go back and pay closer attention to what they are reading- DID you even read it?? Also, someone said that she was too young to write about her life at age 25- WELL that's funny because she did it and A LOT OF PEOPLE enjoy her and loved her story. Actually, I am sure many people out there are hoping for another book. That same person called her "dumb" and I say there is NOTHING dumb about making money! She has a child to raise and she is actually really SMART for writing this book the way she did AND already at AGE 25- because now she can write another one when she is 30 and Hank JR. is 5. It is a great book and hard to put down. It IS OKAY FOR TEENS UNDER 18 TO READ THIS!! IT will teach young girls/guys to LISTEN TO YOUR HEART and FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS~ and that drugs/sex will get you nowhere in life- except into trouble and they are not worth your time. SO those of you making comments about the age of the readers- you are totally wrong and you obviously have no idea what kids are doing at such young ages these days- GET A CLUE! They are going to be around it anyway, so why keep them from reading about it? It says nothing about her looks or "being beautiful will get you whatever you want in life"- so the people that wrote that are confused and just insecure with themselves. Very sad. Read something else if you don't like what hot chicks that have a bright future ahead of them have to say. -Okay so I could go on all night but I will stop there. Just be nice, or don't say anything at all. That is my message.

    You've come a long way Kendra!

    This book is heartfelt and touching. Kendra doesn't hold back in allowing the reader to know her entire life story. I was surprised about the revelations of what actually happened at the Playboy mansion and also shocked that Hugh Hefner would allow these truths to be told. I admire Kendra for how far she has come. I hope she continues to see success. She has certainly changed quite a bit and appears to be very happy with her husband and being a mother. Keep it up!

    Amazing IF you love Kendra!

    I personally love watching Kendra's show every sunday night on E! so I couldn't wait for this book to come out! I finished reading it the day I started because it was so interesting! I always wanted to know what happened behind the doors at the Playboy Mansion. I could not put this book down! Being a teenager I did not take this book as what I should do in my own life. After reading about her past, I did not want to become a stripper and think that I was going to be discovered. People who think that is going to happen are very unrealistic or know girls who are very easily influenced. Also, I did not have any problems reading this book. Nothing was confusing or contradicting. If you actually read the book it says how she was first a dental assistant and then became a stripper. She did both at different times in her life. Her father was in and out of her life so there was never a definite age. Although she is still young, I believe that she has a lot of experience and definitely has an interesting story to tell! I mean how many people have lived in the Playboy Mansion before? If you watch the show, then you see how she tells her ghost writer exactly what she wants in it and reviews the book with him, so it is an autobiography. It came from her mouth! I would only recommend this book if you actually like Kendra and have an open mind.

    GO KENDRA GP KENDRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

    i love Kendra Wilkinson sliding into home is great I'm not quite done with the book yet but it is so good and hell of funny i didn't know that the girls had a nine o clock curfew i thought that was crazy because they are grown women but i guess that's the way Hef wants it the 1,000 a week allowance is cool. i so recomened this book if you like kendra or the girls next door or if you really want to know what goes down in the playboy mansion then you need to go pick up this book.

    Fun, Cute, Witty totally the girl I thought she was!

    I gave this book four (4) out of five (5) stars, because yes it was a cute easy read but if you have ever seen the "E True Hollywood story on Kendra" this book basically details pretty much everything they already discussed on the television program. I mean don't get me wrong the book was still good and yes there were a few things, people and details i had know clue about but i wish there was more about her time in the manison and not just skim through in the "BIG" breakup with Hef, all and all i am not knocking the book by all means ( and if your reading this Kendra dont whoop my ass lol) but i think a few more months in writing could have done a world of difference!!!!!!

    Interesting

    Interesting. Not enough details on Heff or the mansion. Kendras history is def not what i expected, WOW! At some point in this story I realized Im really not all that interesred in her lifes story beyond Heff. She does share one small tad of a sexcapade with Heff.
