All Music Guide - Rick Anderson
These nine Midwestern boys all from Des Moines, IA perform wearing orange industrial coveralls with UPC symbols on the front; each bandmember is identified by a number, which is painted on the sleeve of his coveralls. Each also wears a really nasty-looking mask. Judging from their appearance and from the sound of their debut album, it's easy to assume that they're upset about something. What it is exactly is kind of hard to tell, since the stuttering roar of Number 8's vocals is barely discernible through the jackhammer death metal drums, massed guitars, horror-show samples, and jittery turntable scratches that pummel the listener through almost every song. What it is exactly is kind of hard to tell, since the stuttering roar of Number 8's vocals is barely discernible through the jackhammer death metal drums, massed guitars, horror-show samples, and jittery turntable scratches that pummel the listener through almost every song. You thought Limp Bizkit was hard? They're the Osmonds. These guys are something else entirely. And it's pretty impressive. Although those lyrics that are discernible are not generally quotable on a family website, suffice it to say that the members of Slipknot are not impressed with their fathers, their hometown, or most anything else. "Surfacing" starts out by cursing pretty much everything generally, and then it starts getting aggressive, as shrieking guitar feedback alternates with DJ scratching. "Spit It Out" is speed rap-metal with an actual melody in the chorus; "Scissors" ends the program with a sound that quite simply couldn't get any more aggro without falling apart entirely, and by the end, the singer actually sounds like he's about to burst into tears. An auspicious debut. [Slipknot reissued their eponymous debut in 2009 to mark the record's 10th anniversary. The special edition CD/DVD featured the original album in its' entirety, as well as numerous bonus cuts, demos, remixes and a full length concert DVD from 2000 bolstered by a 50-minute documentary.]

    Too Much!

This is a formidable album, but these guys were just too angry & hostile and used entirely too much language throughout this album. It was too much for me. I don't mind a little language or angst here and there in certain albums, but this was a bit much. Sure, it's just words, but by society's standards, it's still cursing, and I just feel that too much language, and also too much hostility, just taints music. You can still have good metal & death metal music without so much language and hostility. I understand that Iowa is not much different either. If you like that sort of thing, then have at it, but I just can't deal with it. I think I'll stick with Subliminal Verses and All Hope Is Gone. Those I can deal with.

ONE OF THE BEST CDS EVER!

this cd rocks! i've listened to old-style kind of stuff for a while, and it would never ever top up with this. just this cd is just way better than a most of the bands in this entire world. "cough! iron maiden cough!"

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!

Damn, what do we have here, If you like this you are a pretty weird guy, or girl. I mean, come on the riffs on this album suck so bad I bet your grandmother can top em, I know mine can. Heavy metal sure has gotten crappy. In the 70's we had Black Sabbath and Deep Purple who rock. In the 80's we had Metallica and Iron Maiden who rock. And now we have some freaky sons of, well, clowns. Yes Slip Snot, I mean not or what ever want to be circus characters or somthing, Damn our society cant win, Thats American music for ya. Buy some real metal and stop being a freak, come on.

    Simply great metal

While some metal fans may argue that this album is "fake" or some other word of their choosing, they are ignoring the great talent that made this album. First of all, how many metal artists, death or otherwise, hail from the middle of the United States and manage to become worldwide phenomenae? Second, some may point to songs such as "Spit It Out" and say that they're trying to be emo posers with the rapidfire wordings. Hardly. Songs such as this are simply so fast and hard that the lyrics must be screamed as fast as humanly possible. While not all the songs may be winners, this is an album that is definitely worth a listen. If you need a softer introduction to Slipknot, without the cursing of humanity and the throat-injuring screams, take a listen of Slipknot: The Subliminal Verses Volume 3. If you're just wanting to jump in and experience being a Maggot, then there's no better album than this

    I'll let them slip!

This is Slipknots first album and I say it's great, the band is good and the mask are cool. What they play is hard and it sounds scary, they got some good stuff. Get it if you are hardcore rocker.

    AMAZING

This is by far my favorite metal album of all time, and Slipknot is my favorite metal band as well. Don't listen to the people who say this is death metal and its all horrible, because Corey Taylor puts a lot more thought into his songs then most artists do. If you like metal at all, i highly advise you to buy this CD.

Everyone should listen at least once.

This a very good album. I only gave it four stars because it isn't as focused as their next two albums, Iowa and Volume 3 the Subliminal Versus, but it is still very good. Also it slows down every now and then. Regardless this is still some of the best Nu Metal out there.

    You Stupid morons.

ok for one, slipknot is not "GOTHIC". just plain heavy, heavy rock\metal. if your gonna like slipknot for what\who they are, dont catorgize them as a (a really dumb and made up religion) band, they only used some lyrics to attrach attention and to get people to like thier style of music. oh,if u like metal with some twists in it, buy this cd and all the other slipknot cds.
