Overview

New York Times bestselling author Bernard Goldberg argues that the left-leaning mainstream media crossed the line during the 2008 presidential election campaign and helped to determine the outcome.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Conservative media superstar, CBS veteran, and New York Times bestselling author Goldberg (Bias) takes on the liberal media for overwhelmingly supporting Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election campaign. Goldberg uses name-calling, statistics, and personal musings to support his contention that mainstream media has a profound liberal bias. (The amount of liberal Goldberg-bashing in print and online makes for a fair fight.) Implied is the need for listeners to devise strategies for obtaining balanced news coverage. Multiple Audie Award nominee Alan Sklar (see Behind the Mike, LJ 3/1/09) delivers a fine performance; highly recommended. [Includes a bonus interview with Rush Limbaugh; audio clip available through www.tantor.com; the Regnery hc, published in February, was a New York Times best seller.—Ed.]—Cliff Glaviano, Bowling Green State Univ. From A Slobbering Love Affair

"Never in my memory were so many journalists so intent on effecting change as they were during the campaign of 2008. Sure, mainstream journalists always root for the Democrat. But this time it was different. This time journalists were not satisfied merely being partisan witnesses to history. This time they wanted to be real players and help determine the outcome. This time they were on a mission, a noble, historic mission, as far as they were concerned. In fact, I could not remember a time when so many supposedly objective reporters had acted so blatantly as full-fledged advocates for one side-and without even a hint of embarrassment.

"...Make no mistake: this is not the same old liberal bias we have witnessed for years. In 2008, the mainstream media crossed a line. As a result, their credibility is in tatters. Hardly anyone trusts them anymore. This is not good for them, of course. But it may be even worse for us."

unfair and unbalanced with the media and the 2008 election

bernard goldberg has put together a remarkable book with most indepth documentation showing how the media does not give equal and fair coverage in the 2008 presidential election. he clarly shows how the media did not cover any of this candidates questianable activities or people that make him look bad like william ayers.in other words the media did not want to cover the election they were more intrested in electing a candidate. this is a very fasinating book . mr goldberg has documented a very indepth bestseller and alot of very intresting reseaerch that shows that the press should be showing both sides so people could be properly educated on the issues and the candidates.

    Exactly What I was thinking

I was so dissapointed in the media bias, that I turned off the television multiple times and just called people that knew what was really going on. Going straight to the source was (and still is) the best way to get true information. I wrote at least 12 letters to CNN for either getting it wrong or leaving out pertinent information that created a left leaning bias. Thank you for writing this book and "Thinking outside the flock"!

I think i am going to puke!

The way the media fawns all over Obama is sickening. He has only been president for a week and if they had their way he would already be on Mt. Rushmore. Can't they atleast wait a couple of years and see how he does as president. This is exactly why i started taking what ever the main stream media says with a grain of salt a long time ago. And the negative ratings prove that the Obama kool-aid drinkers cannot handle the truth about the media and their love affair with the messiah.

    Finally, somebody else gets it....

I'm glad I'm not the only person who sees how ridiculous the media and the amount and type of coverage Mr. Obama gets. The man has yet to do anything that warrants the media's adoration of him. Hopefully this book will show others and get them to start thinking for themselves and not follow what they are being spoon fed by the media.

    Let's be frank....

Mr. Goldberg presents a very well-written book that should provoke thought, not crass remarks in defense of 'Obama'. Albeit the title leans way over to the side, it is a very informative book that should not be simply passed over as 'right-wing' malarkey. And whilst on the subject, let us be candid; Barack Obama will not walk on water, okay? I'll say it once again; HE WILL NOT WALK ON WATER. Nor will he reinvent the wheel, cure cancer or reveal the meaning of life. He is not some messiah or 'chosen one' who'll "lead us into the promised land;" he's just a guy. A guy who, by the way, speaks well and has a degree of charisma that helped him ascend to the office of president without the practical experience that would normally qualify anyone else. PLEASE liberals, understand this so that we can get to the point where we can see just how he'll do in his term.

    A Necessary Read for Balance

Being stuck with the Washington Post for local and national news coverage, I am at a distinct handicap. But the Post is a fair bellweather of the extreme liberal Democratic party line of the major media. Goldberg, having spent 28 years at CBS with Rather & Co knows what he is talking about. He correctly observes that the media didn't elect Obama, but they certainly get an F- for not investigating this man and his associates. It is a horrible waste of the first ammendment rights to not be balanced and not use their investigating resources to let the American people know what they are getting. This book is a must read, sadly it will never be reviewed in the Washington Post book section.

    Hypocritical

This is a miserable era, thanks in no small part to the party, and President, in power as it descended into hell the last four years. There, that's out of the way. But, this book is not really about which party won elections, partisan grievences against Obama and his decisive victory...this book is not "right," it's CORRECT about popular media's biases in its coverage of Barak Obama and the campaign. Goldberg has done it again and it must drive his peers nuts to have as effective a whistle blower as him to point out their weakness over and over and over again. Just as Rush Limbaugh is biased, so is NBC. Just as Sean Hannity is biased, so is CBS. Just as Glenn Beck is biased, so is ABC. The difference is that commentators like Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck don't pretend to be objective and are conservative commentators. Therein lies the problem with major broadcast network news personalities and agendas. You can like Obama or hate him I don't care, but stop denying he got loved to pieces by an industry that engages in smug and negative caricatures of conservative cable news networks all the while indulging in its own deceit like a bunch of hypocritical Pharisees. It's been going on for decades at the big dailies and broadcast news giants. Read this book if you seek truth about media bias. Read all Goldberg's books for the same reason. They present irrefutable evidences all along the way and they are true.

An outstanding Job of finally saying what those of us without a voice in the public domain have been saying along. Thoughtfully laid out with detailed examples of this media frenzied love affair. You have to be blind after reading this book to not admit that Goldberg is SPOT ON

Goldberg's writings should be a mandatory course taught in all High Scools!

He really made his point in a consise, unbiased way. I know longer trust the media, because they obviously have their own agenda, and he proves this over and over. I am scared for this country, but at least now I know where to go to get unbiased and fair news!

    Refreshing...

I bought this book because I have felt like I was going crazy...that I was the only one concerned with the total death of the media during this last farce of an election season. I bought this book for affirmation purposes, not so much educational...but was pleasantly surprised to learn many things along the way. A good read that will unfortunately be buried by most literary publications.

    Excellent Book, A Must Read!

These book was entertaining and informative. Love his point about the media not reporting in an unbiased fashion and how dangerous that is to out very freedoms. The media themselves should read this and examine themselves. They can have their own beliefs but their job is to report the news and let us decide. If they want to sway people's opinion they can always get a job as a commentator.

    Sour Grapes

The author seems to be one of those people who thrives on slinging mud. I thought we had seen enough of it during the recent campaign, but I guess Bernard Goldberg can't get over it that it's over. While the majority of Americans is anxious for Barack Obama to rescue this country from ruin, there remain people such as Mr. Goldberg who prefer the continued hate mongering. It is most amazing, however, that there is no mention of the Republican opponent's skeletons in the closet that were never mentioned by the media, as for example presciption drug abuse by Cindy McCain and its coverup. The liberal media is a myth. The outgoing president and his helpers were able to ruin this country precisely because the coroporate owned media gave them a free pass.

    Frightening

Observing the process slowly unfold was scary enough, reading it in such depth really brought it out in full.
So many of the voting populace were kept completely ignorant of the history of the person who is now our president. I do hope for Obama to succeed, because his failure or success belongs to every American. I also hope that there are people in the media watching him and the rest of our government without a thrill running up their leg, but with a critical eye to make sure they are looking out for us.

    Excellent Book

Bernie Goldberg wrote a very concise book. This book begged to be written. I had always wondered where this man named Barack came from. How exactly did he win?? The media was looking for a ultra-liberal and they found him. It sickens me to realize how he and his Clinton re-treds are hurting my country. Thank you,Bernie for this book.

What a waste of 20 Dollars

I picked this up in the hopes of getting some more insight to what I noticed watching MSNBC during the election. However with in reading a few chapters of this book I felt like this authors name was just a pen name for Ann Coulter. The information given in this book is questionable at best, many things sited have been explained by third parties who were there when it happened. The Author again takes GREAT liberty with the reasoning behind some of the actions and situations. Not really offering anything of substance, more of a "because this is what I think, thats must have been what happened" mentality. I can see how this would easily appeal to the die hard McCain supporters, who are more interested in venting their anger over the loss and not looking to get actual facts. Because if that's what you are look for. Look else where and save your money.

    Not surprising.

I've noticed that people who dislike Bernie and can't see the bias in the media are all liberals. I wonder if they had a different political and social view if they would then see it? I don't drink the Kool-Aid so I see the bias very clearly. If you can put aside your preconceived notions and automatic hate for a conservative and give this book an honest and heartfelt read, then maybe, just maybe, you'd see that the Kool-Aid tastes pretty bad.

    Goldberg tells the real story.

It is unlikely Mr. Goldberg has endeared himself with some of his colleagues. However, he endears himself with readers since his portrayal of the press' role in the Obama campaign is very well researched and cited in the body of his paragraphs; thus written in clear, refreshing fashion. The reader will be relieved that this is not some simple-minded diatribe against Obama, but rather is an ominous telling of what was, is, and will be the American Press and Mainstream Media. Unfortunately, he paints a dismally clear future as he progressively weaves his tale of woeful press performance. Mr. Goldberg draws on his own long experience in the news business and leaves no doubt about his subject. Mr. Goldberg alludes to solutions without being overbearing. He criticizes without malice and sticks to the facts in an easily read format. An easy read with unanticipated substance -- a pleasure.

    A Must read for today

This book presents what the media that traditionally is liberal has done for this President. It has basically created him, and it makes the reader think that it will be very ugly when the media falls "out of love" with this guy and turns on him.
    Great read for political thinkers!

Slobbering Media, all over the Obamamessiah

Bernard Goldberg's is a fastinating companion to his first book "Bias". But this time the media's partisanship had real consequences, they helped elect the most unqualified person ever in our history as President. This book vividly maps how they cherry picked stories, and framed issues to put the best face Obozo and the worst on McLaim (and I am not a McLaim fan.) Along side Bias, this book plainly point out that the media is losing both subscription (newpapers) and viewers (TV) because the people know propaganda when they see it.

"A Slobbering Love Affair" chronicles the demise of major establishment media and in the future will be a seminal text warning all at the time, but ignored by the media elites. But they will still be wondering what happened.
