"Slow A" is a will writen novel...May not be as good as "The Gaean Trilogy", but I never once thought about it being slow or boring...

It's not typical Varley since aside from the setup with the oil fields there's no science fiction, but that was deliberate on his part and I knew it going in. I was riveted, despite having very little knowledge of LA's geography. I started it late one night and didn't go to bed until I'd finished. I had to know what happened! Who would survive? How would they survive? Varley writes people I care about, and this book is definitely no exception. The Marshalls were real to me, and I'd like to think I could face that kind of situation with the same grace and courage.

Usually love John's work due to the captivating story lines. Not so this time. I'll wait for the next book from him.
