Editorial Reviews

Stuart Miller
Mysteries featuring African American policewomen are something of a rarity, so it's a pleasure to report the arrival of the second installment of the Marti MacAlister series. Lincoln Prairie, Illinois, may be small in size, but it's big in crime, as four homicides--two arson victims, one hit-and-run casualty, and one death by beating--occupy the time of Marti and her partner Jessenovik. Eyewitnesses are in short supply, although the right-to-life pickets outside the women's-health clinic where the arson occurred provide an ample number of possible, albeit unlikely, suspects. Bland interweaves the strands of these four crimes in a flawless manner, setting the action against the backdrop of Marti and her family's struggle to come to terms with her husband's death. This is a well-paced, cleverly plotted procedural with fully developed, engaging characters. Bland is a writer not to be missed.
