Slow Snail

Overview

Where is that snail going so s-l-o-w-l-y? Mary Murphy brings her surefire baby appeal to this bright concept book.

Snail is soooo slow! It takes her all day to slide down her flower, through a boot, under a stick, along a bottle, and in and out of a brick, trailing silver all the way. But when she finally arrives at her vegetable bed, it’s worth it — she’s just in time for dinner!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In this board book, there is some action, but it is very slow. It features a snail which moves s-l-o-w-l-y down a flower stem. She then moves over a stone, through an abandoned boot, under a stick, along a bottle, and in and out of the holes in a brick block. What is the object of all of this effort? The snail is just in time to join a friend for dinner. The pictures are not detailed, but clearly feature all the items. The most interesting feature is the silvery line that represents the snail's course and represents the slime that a real snail would leave as it travels. This board book is a cute presentation of positional concepts and introduces a few that are not commonly found in board books, such as "in and out" and "along." It is a book that can be used to teach science, movement, and also encourage young readers to engage in an action by tracing the snail's path with their own fingers and perhaps pretend that they are snails. PreS—These titles complement each other in their simple exploration of opposites. In Quick Duck!, an energetic duckling joyfully bounds out of a mud puddle, under a hedge, and around some flowers to join its family down at the pond. "Snail slides s-l-o-w-l-y down her flower" across a stone and beyond on her way to dinner with a friend, always s-l-o-w-l-y. Children can track the animals' journey across the pages, by way of duck's muddy footprints and snail's slime trail. In both cases, ink and watercolor cartoons are rendered digitally, creating simple and charming works.—Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ
