Editorial Reviews

New York Times
"An atrociously funny guidebook geared to churn your intestines."
Horn Book
"Irresistibly repulsive...evokes delicious shudders of disgust."
Rolling Stone
"If you're going to read but one book this summer, make it Slugs."
American Bookseller
"You can't beat this book for sheer hilarity. I know it's gross. That's the best part!"
Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
The disgusting humor in this little book will have limited appeal especially to parents. The text is funny as well as the colorful drawings, but the subject matter, slugs, and the treatment, suggesting ways to eat them, can be too much for some children. The accompanying stuffed slug seems like an immature idea, but then so is the humor. More like a gag gift.

    A Timeless Classic!

I had this book as a kid, and I loved it to death! It goes to show that if you are mean to animals, they can be mean right back to you, even if it's as little as a slug.

I don't know why somebody said that the book promotes animal cru

I don't know why somebody said that the book promotes animal cruelty. Obviously, if you'd read until the end of the book, you'd see that the book basically says to treat others the way you want to be treated... including animals.

My dad used to read this to me and my sister when we were younger, and I don't have any scars from hearing about the "yucky" slug-eaters! I remember saying things like, "Ewwww.... Gross!.... Why would they eat slugs???" and my sister and I would be giggling.

Basically, I would recommend this book to all kids who get a kick out of yucky and funny things! Obviously, they should be old enough to understand the meaning of the story, though. I wouldn't suggest buying the book for a 2 year-old who only hears the words and sentences, but can't yet wrap their mind around the meaning of the ending.

My dad would always end a story with, "And the moral of the story is...?" And to this particular story, I'm sure my sister and I responded with something along the lines of, "Treat all animals nicely, even bugs. Treat others the way you want to be treated." I'm now 21 (and a vegetarian, I might add!), and I still have this book - and I would definitely buy it for my kids, because it doesn't "promote animal cruelty as funny," but it lets children have a good laugh at the gross thought of having slug milkshakes, while also learning that everyone, even slimy little slugs, should be treated equal.

Disturbing book promotes animal cruelty as funny

I bought this book for a nephew who loves slugs and was unable to give it to him due to the disturbing nature of both the story and the illustrations. Definetly NOT a good book for kids.
I would not give this book any stars but the review would not go through if I did not give it one.

    A reviewer

I got this book when I was about 3 I think. And I have been looking for it for years. It is so funny! I just bought two coppies for my friends who now have children. It's not a gag gift at all! I loved the twist at the end! If children are traumatized it's because of their parents not this book.

    Every kid's favorite picture book

I first bought this book for my now 27 and 25 year old niece and nephew. I've bought numerous copies for other young children over the years, and the result is always the same. It's hysterically funny, even for adults, and has just the right amount of 'ooooh, gross-ness' that pleases young children. It's always the one book that doesn't get given away or handed down. My 25 year old niece now reads it to her five year old daughter - same reaction. I highly recommend this book!
