    Does exactly what it promises

S/M 101 is an excellent primer for all those beginning to explore the world of consenual sadomasochism. Within its pages are numerous tips, S/M quotes, how to¿s complete with illustrations, as well as chapters on bondage, finding partners, negotiation, flogging and other erotic tortures, safety, and many delicious other practices. I found the quotes scattered throughout the text from real life practitioners to be informative as well as comforting (whoa, somebody else thinks that too!), while the text itself did a fantastic job of putting forth all the basics of S/M while not taking all of the fun out of it . I have given several copies of this book to friends just starting out. Also read and recommended for the beginning to moderate S/M player are The Topping Book and The Bottoming Book ( by Liszt and Easton), Screw the Roses, send me the thorns by Miller and Devon , Different Loving ( an excellent overview of alternate sexual practices) and S/M Classics (assorted authors). Vehemently not recommend would be The Q letters by John Q. Waste of a perfectly good tree.

Good enough to be taught in school.

If you're new to BDSM or just curious--this is probably the book for you. Good enough to be used in sexual behaviour classes in college.

    Excellent Introduction

I let my girlfriend barrow this book before we became involved not only as a way to show her my lifestyle choices but also as a way to educate her and dispel some of the myths surrounding the BDSM subject. We have been together for several years now and have handed this book out to at least 25 of our friends who were curious or ignorant. Either way a great starter from an author actually involved in the scene. Highly recommended to anyone no matter what their experience level.

    Excellent Book!!

Jay has written a wonderful intro to the SM world. He walks the reader through almost all aspects of SM and helps to remove some of the misconceptions that they might have about what SM is, he sure did in my case. Because of his book, I am no longer ashamed of my submissive masochism and a WHOLE lot more informed about safety and other issues of concern that I feel anyone interested in SM should know. I also enjoyed his writing style in so much as, it wasn't a dry, text style book. Although it wasn't a 'story' he makes the reader want to read what comes next with his humor and a down to earth, realistic approach.

    A user-friendly introduction

SM 101 was one of the very first books on the subject I read, and the humor, personal tone, and emphasis on safety and consensuality were instrumental in helping me to feel safe in exploring the topic more. Its appendices are loaded with useful references and contact info for BDSM organizations and support resources. It should be on the reading list for every BDSM beginner.

    Great introductory SM book!

Jay teaches the fundamentals of BDSM in his usual conversational style. Never talking down to his audience, his purpose is to inform, whether it's about a particular technique to try or to caution about a potentially dangerous activity. The book has chapters about a number of different topics ranging from bondage, finding other partners, whipping, doing SM 'safely' (using barrier protection), and even a chapter for novice 'Dommes.' This book was one of the first SM books I ever bought. I highly recommend it!

    SM 101: A Realistic Introduction

Those in the SM scene have been handing out this book like candy to potential partners, caring families, and inquisitive friends. There's no better way to let them see the truth about sadomasochism and the SM scene than to let them read SM101, by a man who has been active in it for more than twenty years. He shows that, rather than the cold, brutal world of pain and humiliation that outsiders often imagine, SM is a way of loving playfully and intensely. For those whose desires drive them to try it out themselves, he provides easy instructions and safety hints in many of the most common areas. He also gives ideas on finding compatable partners, making connections in the SM community, and finding resources on-line. Many players won't play with someone who hasn't read this book!

    SM 101: A Realistic Introduction

And neither am I! We who like our sex spicier than we like our food have here a great resource. People like us can learn the how-to's, they why's, the who's and the where's. We can practice our kinks in a safe manner, with consenting adults who are just like us. It's wonderful to learn that bondage and SM aren't the signs of sickness that our parents might have thought. People like me are funny, they come from all walks of life, they play, they laugh. Any questions? Buy the book!

An Encyclopedia of Information about BDSM

'SM101' is a book about alternative ways to enjoy sensual and sexual experiences outside what most folks consider 'the usual' more than anything else. It's a safety guide, a resource manual, and an explanation of what SM is about. I recommend it to everyone who is interested in bdsm or leather because it's so well-written and interesting, unlike some of the dry, almost clinical text that is written about this subject. Mr. Wiseman talks about the toys and the people involved and it's a great read.
