Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Eisenstein the erratically brilliant Russian film director, propagandist, master of symbolism, and teacher of cinema, springs triumphantly back from obscurity in this painstakingly compiled translation of his memoirs. Writing in an engaging, nonsequential style somewhere between prose and poetry, Eisenstein regales the reader with anecdotes of revolutionary Russia and early Hollywood and provides fascinating insights into his most famous films, notably the sadomasochistic symbolism throughout Ivan the Terrible, Part 1 and the "steps" scene in Battleship Potemkin. His life is interesting enough and his importance in cinematic history great enough that one wishes a current biography with more objectivity existed. Recommended for academic libraries and for public libraries with large film collections.-Cynthia Ward Cooper, Carrollton Libs., Tex.
