The book does not disappoint. It is a broad yet impeccably detailed, clinically-oriented manual of emergency and critical care medicine with the attention to detail one would expect from this assembly of world-class authors and editors.
Purpose: The book succeeds in providing a singularly comprehensive foundation in all aspects of emergency and critical care medicine. Beyond that, it presents a detailed understanding of the nuances of fluid, hormonal, metabolic, and acid-base balance; the pathophysiology of disease; the art of critical care monitoring; and the pharmacology of intervention in an organized and logical manner.
Audience: Although seemingly written for practicing emergency clinicians or criticalists, the book is appropriate and, in my opinion, necessary for excellent practice in many other specialties, including internal medicine and surgery. The editors have recruited the most notable authorities on all aspects of emergency and critical care medicine, surgery, and monitoring to author the chapters.
Features: In addition to comprehensively covering what is known about small animal pathological conditions, the book also includes the reference ranges for a variety of clinical laboratory values and tests, scores for assessment of pain and morbidity, tables summarizing multimodal approaches to medical and pharmacological therapies, and concise explanations of mechanisms of action and interaction of drugs. Although the book might benefit from more color illustrations of various physical examination findings, procedures, and interventions, there is no shortage of explanatory material.
Assessment: The utility of this book is immeasurable. The information it contains is simply invaluable, coming as it does from the countless clinical experiences and discoveries of numerous veterinary specialists, all experts in their fields. This book doesn't just build upon the first edition, it eclipses it by offering a complete and detailed guide to veterinary critical care medicine. The standard of care has undoubtedly been elevated by this update.
