Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Janna M. Johnson, DVM (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This excellent book on small animal spinal disorders combines high-quality color illustrations and the expertise of two authors with neurosurgical experience obtained in the U.S. and Great Britain.
Purpose: The book provides a guide to the current methods used in diagnosis and surgical treatment of spinal disorders occurring in the dog and cat.
Audience: This textbook provides useful information for the student, general practitioner, surgical or neurology resident, or experienced surgeons in practice or academia.
Features: The most outstanding feature of this textbook is the quality of its color illustrations. Color-shaded tables and charts make information easily readable, and the numerous color photographs, line drawings, and superimposed line drawings over photographs provide an outstanding and most necessary addition to the text. The references are not exhaustive but are largely confined to the current literature, and the authors provide lists of suggested readings.
Assessment: This quality textbook is an important addition to the veterinary literature, providing an excellent resource for students and general practitioners to enhance their knowledge in the diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis of spinal disorders in the dog and cat. The book is most useful in providing an outstanding pictorial guide for neurosurgery for the surgeon-in-training. It provides an excellent resource for the experienced surgeon in providing alternative surgical techniques, and it is also a valuable resource for the academician as a teaching tool.
