This book offers excellent design information on dealing with small yards. The information is helpful for any climate and style because it focuses on design, function and enjoyment of the space, no matter how small. Rather than providing a couple of general design chapters padded out with yet another laundry list of plants, as so many garden books seem to do, it explains design elements in terms of shape and placement, using multiple clear examples. It gives examples of the basic shapes of small spaces (long and narrow, shallow and wide, side yards, stairways and landings, sunken areas, courtyards, balconies), and explains what designs can make the most of each type of space. By explaining each design in terms of both visual composition and functional use, the ideas can be used to build gardens of any style. Not only are the examples and illustrations helpful, but Brookes is also an excellent writer and the prose is enjoyable to read, not merely informative. He is able to communicate his decades of experience as a premier garden designer.
