Overview

It is the season of Christmas, and that means it is time to trim the tree, decorate the halls, and, most importantly of all, write to Santa with a heartfelt wish for the perfect present. While other children may be dreaming of new toys under the tree or stockings filled with treats, one little girl simply asks Santa for a friend to share her holiday. But this is a pretty tall order for the jolly old man. Can Santa make her Christmas wish come true? Readers of all ages will be cheered to see that Santa manages to find not just the perfect present, but three special gifts. Charming artwork brings to life the joy felt in making snow angels, the satisfaction of a rousing snowball fight, the pleasure of baking holiday cookies, and finally, the inner peace one feels sitting quietly in front of a warm fire - all the more special when done with a new friend. Jane Monroe Donovan has illustrated numerous titles for Sleeping Bear Press, including Black Beauty's Early Days in the Meadow; the bestselling Winter's Gift; and all of the "Likes to Say" books. Jane makes her home in Pinckney, Michigan.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Donovan's near-wordless story is an animal lover's Christmas wish come true. On Christmas morning, three increasingly large packages from Santa await the pigtailed heroine. Inside them: a cat, a dog, and--hey, we're talking wish fulfillment--a beautiful tan pony. It only gets better as they pile onto her sled, have a snowball fight, and curl up in her bed. Donovan's naturalistic paintings bring out the innate humor of this too-good-to-be-true situation, but also the girl's underlying love of animals. All ages. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, and in this book, the illustrations tell the story. The only words are found in two brief letters to Santa Claus, written by a little girl named Sammy who has just moved to a new house. In the first letter, she says that she doesn't need any toys for Christmas, but she does want something else. The reader discovers what she wants in the illustrations that follow. Under the Christmas tree are three presents in three sizes: small, medium, and large. The small present contains a cat, the medium present contains a dog, and the large present contains a pony. The little girl and her new animal friends have wonderful times making breakfast, sledding in the snow, building a snowman, throwing snowballs, baking cookies, and just being friends together. And, at the end, when all four of them cuddle up in bed for the night, the reader is assured that Sammy's Christmas wish has come true. This is a beautiful book of large, mostly pastel illustrations. The colors are blended so well that in some cases they create the illusion of depth, and Sammy's hair is particularly well done. The illustrations lead the reader from one event to another in a well-ordered fashion, but they also leave room for plenty of imagination. Parents and teachers who are presenting this book to children will want to ask for lots of reader participation and interpretation, something that should spark a lot of fun. The book would make a beautiful Christmas gift for a youngster, and particularly girls. Reviewer: Leona Illig

PreS-Gr 2—A girl who has just moved to a new house mails a letter to Santa, and on Christmas Day her wishes appear under the tree in three appropriately sized boxes—a cat, a dog, and a miniature horse. The new friends play in the snow, make Christmas cookies, and finally snuggle in bed together after a long, wonderful day. This wordless story, told in full- and half-page illustrations, is similar in style to Alexandra Day's "Carl" books (Farrar) in both the realistic artwork and the wish-fulfillment tale, with hardly a grown-up to be seen. It's a sure bet that this super-sweet yet cozy story will have kids adding "a cat, a dog, and a horse—REAL ones" to their Christmas lists.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus Reviews

Sometimes a girl would just like to be left alone with her pets to do what she likes, without all those grown-ups around running the show. That's the case with the main character in this almost-wordless story, which is told through the illustrations except for two letters to Santa. The little girl, who appears to be six or seven, finds three huge packages under her tree on Christmas morning: a cat, a dog and a pony. She feeds them, takes them outside to play in the snow, bakes cookies with them and then curls up with all three pets in her bed after their busy day. Softly shadedpaintings in both full-page illustrations and multiple panels show the fun that the little girl has with her new friends, especially in the snow-speckled outdoor scenes.
