The first 2006 American Idol contestant out of the gates with an album is not winner Taylor Hicks or runner-up Katharine McPhee or even Web favorite Chris Daughtry: it's Kellie Pickler, the Carrie Underwood wannabe with an "aw shucks" grin and a down-home charm. Kellie certainly didn't have the greatest voice among the 2006 contestants, but she sure did have the most personality -- who else could have held their own against Wolfgang Puck in a sketch comedy, as she did on the show's season finale? -- which made her an excellent candidate to be polished and packaged into a pop star. Or, more accurately, a country-pop star, since there was no hiding the twang in Pickler's voice something that hindered her rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," or made it more exquisite, depending on your perspective, nor was there any denying that her strongest base of support was the South, which was only natural for this North Carolina girl. Pickler always played up her country girl persona on the show, and while her antics sometimes bordered on shtick -- there's no other word for her trademark apology, "I'm saw-ree!," which was equal parts Gomer Pyle and Hee-Haw -- it did give her an identity that could be transferred to record, as it is on Small Town Girl. That title makes it crystal clear what Kellie's persona is: she's the girl next door made good, and while she may be on her way in the big city, her heart belongs back home, where she can eat cheeseburgers, not calamari, where girls like her can act like one of the guys, where wild ponies run, and where grandmothers are saints. Some of this does bear the trace of biography -- Pickler indeed is a small-town girl turned into a celebrity, her grandmother was indeed her "angel," raising the young Kellie, whose mother had run off and whose dad was in jail -- but it all plays a bit like a story invented for those fans who loved Pickler's act on AmIdol, and frankly the record is better for it. It's more fun to listen to Small Town Girl knowing the bits and pieces of Pickler's past and present, since it gives some meaning to songs that otherwise are rather formulaic. There are songs of empowerment "Gotta Keep Moving," "I'm on My Way," "Small Town Girl", songs that are sassy but not sexy "One of the Guys," "Red High Heels," which rewrites Miranda Lambert's "Kerosene" by leaving out all the threats and energy, songs that are nothing more than corny jokes "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind", songs that are pure sugary sentiment "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You," "I Wonder," "My Angel", all fitting some aspect of Kellie's personality as seen on TV. Without that context, these songs range from moderately catchy to pleasantly forgettable, but with that outside knowledge, this is a thoroughly likeable record, almost as likeable as Kellie herself. Oh, and as for Kellie the singer? She sure makes for a great TV star, that's for sure.

This album is great! Kellie's southern twang really jazzes it up. From kickin guys to the curb to wondering why her mother left her, Kellie puts alot of heart and soul into this album. It is almost a soundtrack of her life, replaying dark times but also fun times in her life. She really knows how to make a song great. I was also very impressed with the lyrics. They portrayed her feeling and made you think about what it was like for her to live out these scenes. I definitely think this album deserves 5 stars.

I can't believe how good this cd turned out.

Having Kellie co-write her music was a brilliant move. The song samples were nothing compared to hearing the entire songs. I love the natural sound this Cd has, reminds me of John Mellencamp, I still can't believe Idol had anything to do with this Cd because the music was just too impressive. For example the song "Small Town Girl", even though it's a country song, reminded me of Grateful Dead's "Touch of Grey" in that it had the same type of rhythm in the verses. Her song "I'm On My Way" not only proves that Kellie is a powerful vocalist but it showed she can stand toe to toe with the likes of Dolly, Martina and other country greats. I could go on and on but all I'm going to say is just check this cd out for yourself because it's well worth looking into. If this is any example of the music Kellie makes in the future she is going to be huge in the music industry. I am so glad I bought this one. Good music like this is getting harder to find nowadays. Job well done Pickler. I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.

I have always been a huge American Idol fan, as well as a big country music fan. However, while Kellie was on Idol, I didn't think too much of her. After Carrie winning the year before, I suppose I assumed Kellie was a "copycat". After she got the boot on Idol, I honestly never thought about her again, until I heard that her album had gone Gold. I decided to go on iTunes and listen to a couple samples of her songs... and I was very surprised. No, Kellie doesn't have the best voice out there. But she delivers EACH SONG on this album very well. She sings these songs with a great deal of emotion, which makes them seem more appealing. By listening to songs such as "I Wonder" and "My Angel", you catch a glimpse of what Kellie's childhood was like. And in other songs like "I'm On My Way" and "Girls Like Me", you realize that the naive, sweet, southern girl image she portrayed on American Idol really is who she is! Many people (myself included) can relate to certain songs on this CD, which shows that Kellie is a real person too, with ups and downs in her life! Small Town Girl is a great album. It was put together wonderfully, and the fact that Kellie cowrote many of the songs shows that she is in this business for the long-haul. Her voice reminds me a bit of Dolly Parton's... so does her personality, if you watch some of her interviews! Now I wish that I had voted for Kellie back on Idol, and I wish that I had paid more attention to her. I wish her all the best, and cannot wait for her to release another CD!!!

    Loved It!

I think that if she had sounded like this on American Idol she would have had a very good chance at wining. She is gona give Carrie Undderwood a run for her money.

    No Carrie Underwood

Pickler didn't have much of a voice on American Idol, and they couldn't do any more with it in the recording studio. This album is boring and borders on amatuer. Pickler seems to try to sound like Dolly Parton, but she doesn't have the pipes or the style to pull it off. I thought they could do more with her, but this album is a big disappointment.

This is the best album I have heard in a long time. I like Carrie Underwood but Kellie is very pure.

    Didn't quite hit the mark

Kellie was one of my favorite personalities from the beginning of the show, but she just doesn't have the strength and skill to her voice to make her a lasting talent. Also, whenever they rush a CD out like they did with this one, the songs are never high caliber, and I got tired of them before they even got going.

    Kellie is a special girl

This album is really fantastic. It is her life set to music and she is such a special girl. She will be a great star and I think she will remain the same sweet small town girl. I would love to sit down with her and have a cup of coffee. She would be a great friend I am sure.

Kellie's Album will be a Success

Kellie's single, "Red High Heels" is an outstanding song and the rest of the songs are cool too. I hope with this album, it will be a success and see a whole new side to Kellie. Way to go Kellie! Keep on Shinning.

    Not impressed

I was really hoping for better from her, her accent really distracts from the words, I had a hard time understanding her and honestly this album sounds just like any other female artist out there trying to make it in country. Not really anything new. Dolly she's not

Small Town Girl is one of the best albums in years! As good as the song samples sound they do not do these songs justice and you must hear the full songs! Since all songs are great I highly recommend buying the entire album instead of individual songs and you won't be disappointed! 1. Red High Heels - AWESOME song!!! One of the most upbeat rockin' songs I've ever heard and the most upbeat song on the album! Makes me want to get up and dance! I can hear this and other songs in a movie soundtrack. 2. Gotta Keep Moving - Starts with and maintains a great country/rock guitar vibe! Upbeat and awesome! A good song to drive or run with! I love the music and it's one of my favorite songs! 3. Things That Never Cross A Man's Mind - Fun song to give the guys something to think about! Also rocks with guitar! 4. Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You - Starts out slow then rocks! After hearing the sample I knew this would be one of my favorites and it is AWESOME!!!!! Sounds like an automatic #1 hit! Has some good rockin' guitar too! 5. I Wonder - VERY beautiful and sad ballad! I LOVE this song! One of my favorites, maybe #1 or #2! I love the way Kellie sings "California" and "Caroliiina" so beautifully! She sounds amazing in this one! It will make you cry at least twice, once because the story about her long lost mother is so sad and again because it's such a beautiful song and Kellie sings it soooo beautifully! It's the most beautiful song I've ever heard and I'm not kidding! Words can't describe it. I can easily see this as a #1 hit! 6. Small Town Girl - Kellie sounds amazing in this one too! Love it! Includes lots of small town stuff like Coca-Cola and apple pie! "I'd rather ride in a Chevy truck than a Ferrari. Give me a cheeseburger, I ain't eatin' no calamari!" made me laugh! I love it! Has some backing singers near the end too! 7. Wild Ponies - AWESOME!!! Starts out with acoustic guitar then adds beautiful steel guitar! Another 2x VERY beautiful song! Also sad because it's about a troubled relationship. Run ponies, run! I knew just from the sample that this would be one of my top favorites and it is! Kellie sounds very beautiful and sings some very beautiful high notes like when she sang Unchained Melody on American Idol! Kenny Rogers praised Kellie's high notes and Barry Manilow said her voice has a beautiful sound. These 2 legends were right! 8. Girls Like Me - Another great positive song! "I guess there ain't no changin' girls like me!" The world needs more girls like Kellie! She sings about her grandpa too! Has acoustic, electric and steel guitar! 9. I'm On My Way - Another great song that starts out with very beautiful positive lyrics! This is also about her American Idol journey ("so I woke up one mornin', and I put my fears aside, now look how far I've come from, from the back of an endless line." "I'm not there yet, but I know I'm on my way.") Also has some great electric guitar! 10. One Of The Guys - Great girls' and guys' anthem! Fun song! Seriously, the NFL could make this the new Monday Night Football theme song and it would be the best they've ever had! And who wouldn't love to see Kellie kick-off every game!? The music is great old time country with harmonica, steel guitar, etc.! 11. My Angel - Another very beautiful and sad ballad about Kellie's great relationship with her grandmother. Also rocks a little with electric guitar! Listening to this album makes me think about how country songs tell a story, and Kellie tells the best stories! She really put 100% of her heart and soul into Small Town Girl! It's packed with emotion and feeling! Most songs are fun and a few will move you to tears because of the sad stories and because they are just sooooo beautiful! I know I'm wearing out the word but they really are! Beautiful x 4 = beautiful lyrics, beautiful music, beautiful voice, and beautiful singing! No song has
