Charlie and Sally Bertrand visit Sally's hometown of Valle Escondido, New Mexico. An unexplained series of miscarriages among the local women has the recently-pregnant Sally worried. She asks Charlie to look into the death of one of them. Meanwhile, Drake Langston is back, wanting a commitment from Charlie. But she isn't sure she is ready. NPR called it "A good story and a challenging puzzle."

"Three plot strands are capably and grippingly entwined, and Shelton
doesn't shirk from confronting big issues – spousal abuse, gun control –
while keeping us deftly entertained with an enjoyable and resourceful
character. Soft, but with a hard center. Or vice versa. – Crime Time, Birmingham, England

A solid, enjoyable mystery. . . The conclusion is a shocker, and the book kept me
guessing almost until the end. I'll be looking forward to the next book
in the series. --Jeri Wright

“Another delicious read for the beach.” –The Pilot, Southern Pines, N.C.
