Smart Alec by Jim McArdle is a fictional tale about a Dublin Northside family with the youngest member, Alexander, emerging as the principle character. His name eventually became shortened to Alec, and after leaving school he wanted to be his own boss. He set up a chain of fast food outlets with sandwiches the main earner at first, and it all becomes very successful. There were a few hiccups in his relationships with women, and Terry seemed to be the right one, but they just drift apart. However, she comes back into his life, and after moving in with him for a short trial period they marry and have two children. It was as near to the ideal situation as they could hope for, but tragedy strikes when Terry is diagnosed with breast cancer, and despite everything possible being done for her, she dies at 35 and he is left to cope on his own. Eventually a new relationship happens with a young woman from Bosnia, who was a member of his workforce, but this also came to an abrupt end when it was discovered by the authorities that she was an illegal immigrant and she was deported. He just continued on his own then and reared his daughter his daughter and son, and after they had gone to university he became keen on horse racing and joined an owners' syndicate. This provided him with a new interest and despite a few temptations he managed to remain loyal to a vow he made that he would not get involved in any other close relationship with a woman.
