Overview

You've probably been dieting and exercising—or trying to—your entire life. You lose the weight; you gain it back. Or you lose most of the weight, but can't get those last stubborn 5 to 10 pounds to budge an inch. Or you exercise like mad, but still, the butt's a little saggy, the arm's a little flabby, and the belly's a little droopy. Why don't you have the body you always wanted? You may not know the real secrets of strength training and the magic of dumbbells. Judith Sherman-Wolin, exercise specialist at the UCLA Center for Nutrition, has developed a fast and easy dumbbell program that you can do at home and set up for less than it costs to go to a gym every month. You won't look like Arnold Schwarzenegger (who wants to anyway?) but you will watch your butt shrink, your abs flatten, and your arm muscles lengthen and firm. Say "hello" to your bikini and all those sleeveless tops you dreaded wearing when the weather got too hot to stay covered.

All you need is the motivation, and this book will keep you psyched. In Smart Girls Do Dumbbells you'll learn:

the complete 30-minute, 30-day, 30-way, start-to-finish program
how to melt away those stubborn pounds you've been trying to lose your entire adult life
how you can shape a body that burns more calories, even while you're plopped on the couch
inexpensive ways to build your own dumbbell gym
Judith's bonus ab-flattening recipes

Work out smarter, not harder. All it takes is 30 minutes for a leaner, healthier, sexier body!

A must have for all woman.

I use to believe cardio alone could get the job done. My fitness goal was to stay lean. After 35 I started to loose muscle tone. My arms were thin but not shapely like in my 20's. I use to work at a gym some years back so I am fairly aware what needs to be done to improve my tone. So as I am shopping for a Bowflex, I stopped at the bookstore and stumbled on this book. Reluctantly I thumbed thru it and discovered I need this book LOL. All the exercises are simple, and it explains what areas will improve in the event you are unaware. For those who were not raised in an active household, or in a gym enviroment, it is the best book out there to simplify your exercise program. No personal trainers needed. No gym memberships. Just a couple cheap dumbbells and your off. And it works.....My arms and core section have never looked better (even in my 20's). Just simply added 30 minutes three days a week and waalaa.

    Very poor sample

It would be nice if the sample of the book(14 pages) would actually get into the book. All I got was the table of contents and nothing more. It doesn't even get to chapter 1! Can't buy it if I can even read one paragraph. I would give this ZERO stats if it would let me.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

Great for anyone who works with dumbbells, especially beginners!

I found this book to be very helpful with its photo of each exercise and grouping of exercises to cater to specific muscle groups. The author is clearly very knowledgable, and writes in a way that breaks it down in simple, easy to understand terms for the beginner. Experienced weight trainers will get the challenge they need if they start at the end plans.

There is not a great amount of nutrition planning in the book, which should always go hand and hand with any weightlifting for the highest gains. That's not a problem for those experienced ones, but beginners should be wary and pick up a good clean eating to book (Tosca Reno is awesome!) to put it all together.
