Overview

The guide readers need to retire richer—from the international bestselling author of The Smartest Investment Book You'll Ever Read.

In this New York Times bestselling guide, author Daniel R. Solin takes issue with the commonly held belief that participating in defined contribution retirement plans is a “no-brainer” because of the employer match.

While providing readers with comprehensive, accessible information on the most common deferred compensation plans, annuities, and other retirement-based investments, he shows the 70 million participants currently in those plans how to create the best portfolio with often limited options.

In his straight-forward, no-nonsense style, Solin offers the new rules for investing for retirement and shows readers how to quickly and simply determine their own needs, get control of their assets, avoid scams and sucker bets, discover untapped resources at retirement, and eventually get income out of tax deferred plans—the smart way.

Editorial Reviews

John C. Bogle
The tax-deferred retirement plan is the single best way to invest for long-term financial well- being. But far too many of these plans have costs and pitfalls that are hazardous to your wealth. Dan Solin's wonderful book explains why the idea is so good, and why so many plans are bad. Read it, attend to its cautions, act on its recommendations, and when the time comes, enjoy a comfortable retirement. (John C. Bogle, Founder, The Vanguard Group)
Donald B. Trone
Don't read this book! Study it, instead. This is an invaluable checklist, not only for your 401(k) investments, but also for managing any of your other savings. (Donald B. Trone, Director, USCG Academy Institute for Leadership and President, Foundation for Fiduciary Studies)

William Bernstein
Along with airline service, affordable gas, and the Chicago Bulls, your retirement options have also gone to hell in recent years. Solin's book will show you how to plug the leaks in your 401(k) and 403(b) plans, sidestep the minefields in your financial future sown by the investment industry, and get on the road to a secure retirement. (William Bernstein, author of A Splendid Exchange and The Four Pillars of Investing)
Taylor Larimore
Nowhere are investors treated more shabbily than in their 401(k) and 403(b) retirement plans. Dan Solin's book exposes their hidden costs and poor investment choices. More important, Dan tells us exactly what to do about them. (Taylor Larimore, co-author, The Boglehead's Guide to Investing)
Mark T. Hebner
Finally, someone has exposed the failure of our 401(k) system and proposed a solution! Dan Solin has simplified complex investing subjects so that everyone can understand them in one hour.
