I was very disappointed by this book. While already very short, the chapters repeat the same information over and over again without describing anything in depth. Look elsewhere for financial advice.

Take back control of your money!!!

I was fortunate to review an advance copy of this book and it is a must-read for anyone lost in the jungle of high-pressure financial advisors and hyperactive brokers who make snap decisions (with your money) on the 'market news du jour.' The common sense advice, backed up by factual examples, along with clear, step-by-step instruction makes this a financial book everyone should have in their library. Mr. Solin's book provides the financial detail to make educated decisions about your money, yet is written in an easy to understand style.

Reassuring guide to less stressful, more profitable investing

Daniel R. Solin's handy book demonstrates why trading stocks actively is a great idea for your broker or financial advisor, but could be a very bad idea for you and your hard-earned savings. Solin's investment method, while not presented as a fresh invention, is simple: He encourages you to set up a very low-cost account with a reputable company, allocate your assets in a mix of stock and bond indexes that represent the entire market, and regularly rebalance your portfolio to bring it back in line with your desired asset allocation. Solin's virtue is his energetic, sometimes entertaining writing style, as displayed in 44 snappy chapters that avoid financial theory almost completely. He focuses on dollars and cents, and how best to keep them in your own pocket. getAbstract recommends this smart guide as a primer for beginners or financially unsophisticated investors.

Read my July 2007 review of the audiobook (copied here)

In fact, I recommend that you scan the written form of this book first so you know what you'll be listening to. I read a lot of investing books by choice and thought I'd try an audiobook for a change. I decided to start first with what appeared to be a more general investing book. Unfortunately, I chose this one and was very disappointed. Among other things, I feel that Solin's portfolio diversification and allocation recommendations are what you would find going directly to Fidelity's and Vanguard's websites. He also has tunnelvision and a real gripe about investment advisors. I would have no problem with that if he had devoted only one or two chapters on the subject. Well, it permeates his entire book. I'm going to listen to this again just to count how many times he says 'hyperactive brokers,' 'smart' and 'dumb.' Indexers will be elated --they are 'smart.' Self-directed individual investors like me will be devastated to find that we don't exist. We're not even 'dumb' --we simply don't exist in Solin's world. **I find it interesting that the first few lines of my original review were dropped. Perhaps I was too sarcastic.

    FINALLY!

Finally, finally, finally, someone with an investing background and expertise has taken the time to debunk the myths and temper the hype regarding stock market investing for the Average Joe. The book is succinct (easily readable in a night or two), very understandable, and pulls no punches. If you have money in 'the market' via a 401K or any retirement account, and have an substantial (20+ years) investment horizon, this book could easily be the best twenty bucks you'll ever spend.
