Overview

Not nearly the conundrum its title suggests, Rice's third release is his most personal work to date, presenting the doubts and insecurities of a man of faith wrestling with the human condition. Rice sets the tone with the opening track "Questions for Heaven," which features the stylized strains of a circus calliope. Immediately one envisions the daredevil pictured on the album cover, balancing his unicycle on a high wire. Indeed, Rice's songs liken life to such acrobatics, fraught with danger for those who attempt such stunts without the safety net of God. Smell the Color 9 is both searing in its wisdom and poignant in its candor. The gentle ballads "Belong" and "Home Tonight" use the simple strains of a piano to give Rice's poetry real emotional power. Closing with the heartfelt "Life Means So Much," Rice reminds us that despite our struggles, it is through the journey that we grow closer to God; the choice is ours to make the most of it. "Every day is a gift," he sings,"Make the most of the time, every minute you're living." Smell the Color 9 is both empathetic and encouraging, and a welcome gift to Christian music fans.
