Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
"Waa! Waa! Waa! Lily keeps on crying. Oh, who knows what to do?" The strategies of Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle each prove ineffective (Grandma changes Lily's diaper, then nibbles her granddaughter's feet and declares she smells "delicious"). Just when matters look desperate (" `Call the doctor!' Mommy panics... Grandma says a little prayer"), newly minted Lily's big brother, who's been calmly watching the futile attempts, solves the problem. He tiptoes up to the baby and flashes her a big smile. "And with everybody smiling," writes Fleming (Muncha Muncha Muncha), "Lily smiles too!" The familiar story of sibling empowerment becomes fresh and quirky given Heo's (Henry's First-Moon Birthday) exuberant mixed-media collages and graphic sensibility. Her na f-styled family inhabits a bright but definitely off-kilter world, where decorative motifs run riot and scale and gravity are fluid concepts; sometimes the characters swirl around the bawling Lily like anxious bees buzzing an uncooperative flower. It's a nifty visual translation of the way a cranky baby can turn an entire household topsy-turvy. Ages 3-7. (Mar.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Baby Lilly is crying. Is she hungry? Is she wet? Does she need to be cuddled or bounced on someone's knee? Who knows? One by one, with an "I do!" the adults in Lilly's family all try to stop her crying without success. Every attempt, illustrated in Heo's colorful drawings results in the same "Waa! Waa! Waa! Oh, who knows what to do?" Finally, Lilly's brother really does know what to do. He gives Lilly a great big grin. Lilly smiles back, and smiles break out all around. Young children, reading or hearing this cheerful book read aloud, are certain to chant, "Waa! Waa! Waa! Oh, who knows what to do?" while they enjoy the pictures, and smile themselves. This is a fine look-at-together or read aloud book for grandparents, parents, teachers—or uncles, aunts or older siblings. 2004, Atheneum Books for Young Readers, Ages 2 to 7.

PreS-Gr 2-Baby Lily is inconsolable. One by one, each member of her family tries to stop her tears with lullabies, tickles, a diaper change, food, and toys. However, the refrain points up each one's failure to comfort the tot: "But Lily keeps on crying. Waa! Waa! Waa! Lily keeps on crying. Oh, who knows what to do?" Finally her brother smiles his biggest smile and in the cozy ending, Lily grins back at him. The bouncy, rhythmic text begs to be read aloud, and the artwork is a perfect match. Done in oils, pencil, and collage, the illustrations are filled with Heo's familiar bright colors, and the playful shapes, forms, and details leap off the pages. Each spread plays with perspective and offers surprising views of the action and characters. Frieda Wishinsky's Oonga Boonga (Dutton, 1999) portrays a similar situation but lacks the verve of Smile, Lily! This satisfying, buoyant picture book will appeal to beginning readers as well as to storytime groups or during one-on-one sharing.-Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Readers from young children to grandparents will appreciate the frustration felt by Lily's family in Fleming's lyrical journey into what makes a baby tick. The tale begins when "Lily wakes up crying. / Waa! Waa! Waa! / Lily wakes up crying. / Oh, who knows what to do?" This plea repeats throughout, as each family member offers to soothe the seemingly inconsolable infant. Mommy sings a lullaby, but is unsuccessful. Daddy's attempt to play "Superbaby" ends in failure. A clean diaper from Grandma and peek-a-boo with uncle are unable to quell the wailing. When panic starts to set in, big brother's simple solution saves the day, making this a perfect read for new older siblings. Heo's fun, fanciful, flat, and folksy artwork provides bright colors and unique perspectives. One especially amusing picture shows an enormous crying Lily surrounded by tiny worried adults, beautifully illustrating that babies truly are the center of their universe. (Picture book. 2-5)
