From The CriticsReviewer: Martin I Resnick, M.D.(University Hospitals of Cleveland)
Description: This is the second edition of a state-of-the-art book that reviews and details the latest developments in minimally invasive techniques in urology. Procedures applicable to benign and malignant conditions in addition to adult and pediatric disorders are adequately addressed. Topics range from basic principles in the care of instruments to detailed information regarding complex surgical procedures.
Purpose: The purpose is to review the evolving field of endourology addressing established techniques and visiting new ones. Robotic surgery, an emerging technique, is appropriately addressed and its application in both adult and pediatric urology is reviewed. The role of intraoperative imaging techniques in assisting many of the procedures described is also discussed. The objectives are adequately met by the editor and many contributors.
Audience: The book is written for those physicians carrying out minimally invasive urological procedures. Those most interested in the book will be practicing urologists and residents and fellows in training. Other surgeons performing similar procedures and using the techniques described here will also find sections and specific chapters of value. The author is a recognized authority and is well respected not only in urology but in other specialties that incorporate some of the procedures and techniques.
Features: Several sections make up the book. Basic principles, including care and description of instruments in addition to safety measures such as protection from radiation exposure, are discussed. Various procedures are reviewed including percutaneous surgery, ureteroscopy, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, laparoscopy, new technology, and robotic surgery are described. This is an up-to-date compilation of these evolving techniques and the chapters are written by recognized experts in their particular field. The figures are well done and the use of color is very effective.
Assessment: This update is a welcome addition to the urological literature. The editor is a recognized authority as are many of the contributors. The second edition addresses the evolving areas that were not addressed in the first and it is likely that a third edition will be required in this rapidly evolving field.
