Overview

Volume three of a five-CD set issued by the Smithsonian, this set starts off with a short history lesson on the music of Duke Ellington, beginning with 1927's "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" and finishing with 1941's "In a Mellotone." From there on, however, the set moves straight into bop territory with essential sides from Dizzy Gillespie ("I Can't Get Started," "Shaw 'Nuff"), Don Byas and Slam Stewart ("I Got Rhythm"), Erroll Garner ("Fantasy on Frankie and Johnny"), Bud Powell ("Night in Tunisia"), Dexter Gordon ("Bikini"), and Tadd Dameron ("Lady Bird"). But the bulk of this set is turned over to the recordings of Charlie Parker, featuring "Ko Ko," "Embraceable You," two takes of "Crazeology," and his 1946 appearance at Jazz at the Philharmonic, playing on "Lady, Be Good" in the company of Lester Young, Howard McGhee, Willie Smith, and high-note trumpeter Al Killian.
