Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, Vol. 4

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Cub Koda
Volume four of a five-CD set issued by the Smithsonian, this set focuses on bop and modern jazz giants with tracks recorded between 1949 and 1973. No less than five of the 15 tracks are by Thelonious Monk, beginning with 1948's "Misterioso" and finishing with "I Should Care," recorded in 1957. Miles Davis is on here twice, with 1949's breakthrough "Boplicity" and his 1958 recording of Gershwin's "Summertime," arranged by Gil Evans. Important sides from Lennie Tristano, Red Norvo, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, and the Modern Jazz Quartet complete this fine set.
