Smithsonian Goes Wild (Spotlight Smithsonian)

Chapter One

Smithsonian Goes Wild

Where can you see a regal lion from Africa and a folk art lion made from bottlecaps, an endangered Sumatran tiger and a sleek bronze leopard, a Mexican jaguar mask and sparkling cat's eye gems, as well as a host of more familiar cats, from wildcats to Felix the Cat? For those fascinated by all things feline the Smithsonian has it all. But with seventeen museums and a zoo in Washington, D.C., two museums in New York City, various research centers, and more than 137 million objects in all, the Smithsonian can be overwhelming—even for those who have the opportunity to come often. Smithsonian Goes Wild offers a selection of unique items from its many collections and allows you to see them as no other visitor can. In these pages you can experience highlights from the exhibits as well as see lesser-known items that are seldom on view. Here you can watch the National Zoo's cheetahs in motion and view a painting of Muhammad Ali playing cat's cradle. A catfish from the National Museum of Natural History may be swimming near "Cat's Parade" sheet music from the National Museum of American History. Curl up with kittens photographed on a military ship from the National Air and Space Museum or go wild with a panther from the Smithsonian's Tropical Research Institute in Panama. Enjoy the world's largest museum, cultural, and scientific complex without planning a trip, fighting the crowds, or leaving your pet. And return as often as you like.
