The Last Great Wilderness . . .

There is a place where bears can live in peace, where there is sea-ice all year, where the forests are full of prey, where flat-faces never go. Polar bears Kallik and Taqqiq, black bear Lusa, grizzly Toklo, and the shape-shifting Ujurak believe that this fabled bear paradise must be the destination of their quest. But the path they follow is dangerous.

The burning Smoke Mountains are more treacherous than anything the bears have faced before, and tensions run high as they encounter obstacle after obstacle. A rushing river and hostile flat-faces separate them from their goal, and a bear is pushed to the brink of death. Signs and omens point in different directions, and the bears, though traveling together, must each follow his or her own star . . . causing one bear to leave the group forever.

But as the others travel on, they soon learn that it will take all their strength and determination to reach their destination. And, if they reach it at last, they may learn that what they thought was their quest's end is in fact a new beginning. . . .

Editorial Reviews

The adventures of Kallik, Lusa, and Toklo continue in the third installment of Erin Hunter's Seekers series. If fans of Hunter's Warriors haven't already sampled this animal epic, it's time to catch up. The heroes are all young furry creatures: Kallik is a polar bear; Lusa a black bear; and Toklo, a grizzly. Exciting stories; endearing main characters.
VOYA - Kathleen Beck
At the height of "burnsky" (summer), four cubs leave the gathering of bears described in Great Bear Lake (HarperCollins, 2009/VOYA April 2009) to resume their search for the Last Great Wilderness, where animals can live in peace. Following directions from a dying polar bear, they seek a path through the volcanic Smoke Mountains. Along the way, they must cross a swift river, dodge "firebeasts" (machines), and flee from hunters. Everywhere are increasing signs of human presence and environmental degradation. Black bear Lusa and shape-changer Ujurak each dream of a voice that whispers, "Save the wild." But how can a small bear accomplish such a huge task? Arriving at last at their goal, the bears are dismayed to learn that the Last Great Wilderness is not the end of their quest after all. The bears grow and change as the Seekers series continues. Prickly brown bear Toklo and loner Kallik, a polar bear, gradually learn to trust their companions; Lusa grows in confidence and compassion; and Ujurak gains increasing control over his transformations into other animals. The resourceful cubs are given ample opportunity to prove their bravery as they face one danger after another. Despite the excitement, there is no real climax to this volume, which serves mainly to move the bears to the next stage of their quest. The environmental message threatens to overwhelm the story. Nevertheless Hunter's fans will clamor for this book. The publishers have not announced the final number of volumes that are planned for the series. Reviewer: Kathleen Beck
Children's Literature - Cara Chancellor
Hunter's popular "Seekers" series continues with this third installment, which follows young bears Lusa, Toklo, Kallik, and Ujurak on their trek to the Endless Ice, with Kallik's reluctant brother, Taqqiq, in tow. The tensions between their species—black, grizzly, and polar—that erupted at Great Bear Lake increase the difficultly of their already dangerous journey, especially since instigator Taqqiq refuses to accept Kallik's new friends. Must she choose between the brother for whom she crossed a continent and the mission her heart tells her is right? And, even if they can traverse the perilous, rumbling Smoke Mountain to reach the Endless Ice, can the bears escape the "flat faces" with deadly "firesticks" that stand in their way? Fans of Hunter's previous "Warrior" series will enjoy the familiar anthropomorphism and animal's-eye-view that characterize this book, although shape-changing Ujurak—a "Lorax" character who transforms into, then speaks for other animals—gives "Seekers" a decidedly more mystical, environmental bent. The frequent-release timeframe and engaging characterization of these books make them an ideal start for younger readers, both in and out of the classroom. Reviewer: Cara Chancellor

I love the way Erin can see things the way an animal might see them. And though there is tragedies in some things that happen it is still a good book for 10+ year old children. I liked the Warrior books too. After starting reading them from our school library. We purchased several of them for the school. And when you finish one you have to get the next one to find out what happens to the bears.
