Overview

Smoke N Function is a nom de plume of Cliff Sarde, a contemporary jazz fusion musician that decided to venture into new age and electronica territory with a side project. Actually, claiming that Smoke N Function is influenced by electronica is a little misleading, since apart from the occasional trip-hop beat, the rhythms are usually generic club beats and the textures are straight out of new age. Sarde turns Smoke N Function into a late '90s equivalent of Enigma or Deep Forest, only without the worldbeat influences that made those records feel exotic. He generally reworks the same drum and keyboard sounds throughout the album, so much so that when it does take a left turn, such as ringing acoustic guitars and nearly funky saxophones on "Mikaela's Song," the standout track on the album, it is especially notable. Ultimately, that's the problem with Smoke N Function -- it's more about atmosphere than anything else, since there aren't enough variation in rhythm or sonic textures to make it a rewarding close listen. Still, it has enough mysticism and mellow vibes to perhaps appeal to audiences that have memorized their Enigma and Deep Forest albums.
