Overview

Lauren, Ryan, and Simone meet again after the tragedy that brought them all together ten years ago. A serial killer is on the loose in Detroit, murdering men and leaving her mark, and each of these women has a motive to kill. Simone, a sexual abuse survivor and advocate for young girls, has begun to heal her wounds over the past ten years, but she is still trying to reclaim her life. Her mother, Jessica, thinks it's unhealthy for Simone to immerse herself into a world of pain and jaded love when she has yet to fully heal herself. A new, unexpected love interest only complicates things further. Ryan is willing to do whatever it takes to become a mother, even if it means betrayal. With her biological clock screaming and a shameful ten-year secret bubbling to the surface, Ryan is determined to get what she wants, but she may lose her husband-and her mind-in the process. Lauren, one of Detroit's most prominent defense attorneys, redefines justice and seeks a way out of the career that has left her feeling trapped and torn. She can't set her moral standards aside for a $400,000 salary, winning acquittal after acquittal for the demonstratively guilty. But how far will she go to rid Detroit of its criminal filth?

As Lauren, Ryan, and Simone's lives collide yet again, forcing them to deal with the tragedies of their pasts, the three women regretfully learn that no one is safe behind the thin shield of a Smoke Screen.

Meet the Author

Native Detroiter, Monique D. Mensah, is a two-time award winning novelist with an innate love for the written word. Monique's talent for writing was first discovered by her third grade teacher, who regularly asked the young student to share her short stories with the class and sometimes the principal and other school administration during assemblies and PTO meetings. At that time, she declared her dream to become a published author, as she believed it to be her purpose. She continued to receive praise for her writing throughout middle and high school.

After graduating from the University of Michigan, with a bachelor's degree in business management, Monique was prompted by her best friend to, "just write a book" and fulfill her life-long dream. She started her first novel,WHO IS HE TO YOU, a drama that she independently published through her publishing company, Kisa Publishing, in 2009. Monique's debut received critical acclaim by readers and prominent book clubs across the country. In June 2010 she was awarded the title of "Author of the Year" by the African-Americans on the Move Book Club (AAMBC) a national book club organization, promoting African-American authors and literature. In August 2010, Mensah released her second novel, INSIDE RAIN, a psychological thriller that is celebrated as the winner of the 2010 Best Books Awards for African-American Fiction. The Best Books Awards, sponsored by USA Book News, also named WHO IS HE TO YOU as a finalist in the same category.

Monique now resides in Southfield, MI where she is raising her daughter and working full-time as a counselor for a private university. She is also the principal and founder of Make Your Mark Editing Services, a boutique copyediting business that assists authors in turning their manuscripts into masterpieces. SMOKE SCREEN is Monique's third novel. She is currently working on her fourth novel, Nemesis, due for release Summer 2012.

    Great read

I absolutly loved this book. It keeps you wondering right up until the end and even after the big reveal there's still more. It is an easy read & i couldn't put it down. I stayed up until 1130 (even though i have to be up @ 5) just to finish reading it. I cant wait for more of her work. Even if u haven't read "Who is he to you" she gives enough of a background that you can readnthis without being lost.
The author writesnthe characters in a way that makes yiu feel as if you know them, its almost like you are in the same room watching their interactions. More than once i found myself yelling @ Ryan (or wishing i could smack her) or Lauren or rolling my eyes @ Jessica and just wanting to hug Simone. Every woman has a bit of each of the characters inside of her and i think that is part of what makes the book such a great read.
I really enjoyed all if her books & cant wait for a new title.
& the cover art is amazing (just a side note) it really makes you want to read the book because you want to understand tge meaning of the artwork.
You really must read this book...& i really must get to bed.

    A must read!

I have read each of Mensah's books(3) and enjoyed them all. In this book she does it again, keeps me captivated to the very end. And when you get to the end she surprises you even more. I can't wait to read her next novel. She's a new writer but one you definetly want more of.

    She's a Man Eater!

Smoke Screen is part of a psychological thriller series by Monique D. Mensah. Simone, Lauren and Ryan are all trying to heal from the same tragedy that impacted their lives a decade ago. As they make efforts to heal from the past they all face challenges that could ruin the lives that they have managed to build. In the meantime, there's a lady serial killer roaming around Detroit that has everyone on edge.

Ms. Mensah keep readers guessing as she lay out the stories of her three main characters. The author cleverly give readers nuggets of information to prove that each of the three women have a motive to kill. And just when readers think they've figured out which one is the serial killer, she gives the reader enough reason to doubt themselves! Ms. Mensah also introduces you to the "Man Eater", a very sexually charged serial killer that entices men to the bedroom and then leaves them for dead. I enjoyed reading the chapters about the "Man Eater" the most because the character was so precise and calculating. I couldn't wait to see how the "Man Eater" would woo her next prey.

The author gives just enough background information on the main characters so the reader doesn't feel lost if they haven't read her previous books, Who Is He to You and Inside Rain. Because Smoke Screen is so well written, it will make readers want to pick up the previous titles for pure enjoyment. Ms. Mensah's writing style is so intriguing and thorough you can literarily see the story play out as if you were watching a movie. Smoke Screen was a very entertaining and suspenseful read and I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. Although Ms. Mensah only has three published books under her belt, you would never know it. Monique D. Mensah's writing skills is a prime example that it's not about the amount of books published that proves you to be a seasoned author; it's about having the ability to craft a well written story that stands alone and cannot be compared to anyone else's work.
