Reviewed by Annie and posted at Under The Covers Book Blog It’s been two weeks since Sophie and Darius had a quick romp outside of the hospital that Sophie works at. But now trouble seems to be finding the good doctor when Ulrik enters the hospital, searching for Sophie. Instead of keeping his distance, Darius protects her but it’s at a cost. He’s becoming more and more drawn to her. Until he is unable to stay away. I really loved the romance between Sophie and Darius. It’s right up front and centre of this story and becomes the driving force. Grant conveyed the perfect amount of longing and passion to create a believable romance. The only thing I would have liked to see more of is attention to detail. While Grant’s writing is still good, I missed the way she used to elaborate on certain things to make the experience feel richer. This is by no means a simple book, but because it’s so clean cut and straight forward, it does feel less complicated. Grant also builds on other characters, giving readers greater insight into Rhi, Balladyn and Con. All of these side characters are becoming more and more important to the series. I find Rhi to be more of a complicated character. She’s kind of stuck between two men and in this book, she almost seems to be hiding from them. Meanwhile the men are doing all they can to bring her back safely. As for Balladyn, I quite like his character. He brings something very special to the series and although he isn’t portrayed as all good, he does create some good tension with Rhi’s character. Con, on the other hand, might be my favorite so far. He’s the King of Kings and his power is very evident on the page. I like how straight forward he is. I think it’ll give the series something new to explore. Once again, Grant pens a beautiful romance while also further building on her world. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for her readers next!

Donna Grant always knows how to please the reader. Her characters are fascinating and well developed, and her plot and conflict is always riveting and enjoyable. This installment of the Dark Kings was passion filled from page one, literally. Sophie and Darius are intensely attracted to each other and they can't be in the same room without touching and kissing each other. I enjoyed the story and the conflict with Ulric and the Dark is heating up. The Reapers are making more of an appearance and Rhi and Balladyn's relationship takes a new turn. Grant teased the reader with whom Rhi's Dragon King might be, but a name is never revealed (tease!). The cliffhanger at the end was a nice surprise and hopefully is a good omen. I'm not sure who I want Rhi to end up with though; her King, Balladyn, or her Reaper watcher. I look forward to seeing what is in store next.

An ultra intense installment featuring Darius, the dragon king of the purples and the Doc! She'd come across a few Highlanders while in Edinburgh, but none compared to Darius. She didn't even have to ask if he was a Highlander. It was in the way he held himself, the way he spoke. It was a look that couldn't be faked or copied. Whatever made a man a Highlander was in his blood, in his very soul. SMOLDERING HUNGER by Donna Grant is an ultra intense installment in Donna's fantastic Dark Kings series! I'm addicted to the series and have to say that this cover is my favorite-to-date as I absolutely love the purple, which is the color of the featured dragon king's banished dragons. This story was so good that I had to stay up till the wee hours of the morning finishing it. This is the story of recently-awakened dragon king Darius and human doctor Sophie Martin. Darius and Sophie were great. Their attraction was hot and steamy from the get-go. They were each passionate, strong and compelling characters. Add in to the mix dark and light fae political intrigue, fascinating dragon kings' behind-the-scenes espionage, catching up with previous favorite characters and I was captivated. You could read SMOLDERING HUNGER as a standalone if that is is preference as the romance and danger plot are self-contained within this novel. However, I wouldn't recommend it. Someone jumping into this one without having read the previous installments, would not be cognizant of the historical details as far as the Ulrik/Con showdown - which is pervading all the characters' lives at this point, though Donna is very good about filling in what is absolutely needed from previous installments. This whole series has been wonderfully entertaining and reading it from the beginning would be preferred. Rhi has been one of my favorite characters in this series from the beginning and, happily, there is LOTS of Rhi in this. I plan to pick up Donna's new Reaper's books next as Rhi's watcher and the mysterious goings-on in Edinburgh with light and dark and the white-haired man, have my interest piqued. I'm dying, of course, to learn who her mystery dragon king lover was and more about her and Con. I was cheering her on when she gave Con some much-deserved comeuppance herein. I hope that Sophie's friend, Claire, gets her own HEA in a future book. Claire has stated that Bob, aka her battery-operated-boyfriend, is losing steam... so she's in need and I like Claire's spunkiness. She's a fun character. Donna's writing is mesmerizing and just plain amazing, as always. I simply could not put SMOLDERING HUNGER down once I started reading it and can't wait for the next installment, SMOKE AND FIRE, due to release April 2016! Donna's sexy Scottish dragon kings rock my boat and I look forward to each new installment as, one by one. they're finding their mates. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys hot, suspenseful, action-packed paranormal romances. My full review will be posted at Reading Between The Wines Book Club. Please check it out there. 4 Wine Glasses!

This was such a great book. It was chuck full of action and romance. We learn a lot about Con and Rhi. As well as Usaeil, Ulrik, and even the Reapers. Seeing Darius fall in love again after what he had been through was so beautiful. He is definitely one of the most swoon worthy Dragons in the series, I am also hoping we see more of Sophie's friend Claire in the future.

It’s been two weeks since Dr. Sophia Martin had seen Darius. Two weeks since he brought her body to life and made her realize how lonely she was. When he suddenly reappears and seduces her again and yet again disappears, she's determined to keep her walls up. When a mysterious man named Ulrik does up at the hospital wanting to propose a job opportunity to her, she immediately recognizes him as someone to stay away from, but someone also one who has experienced similar pain. Ulrik’s gives Darius the excuse he needs to be close to Sophia again. Ever since the first time he saw her and had her, he’s been unable to get her out of his head. First off, I loved this entire book. I loved being brought back into Donna Grant’s world of the Dragon Kings and after meeting Darius and Sophia in the previous books, I was happy to start this set. As with the author’s other books, this one pulls you right in as we experience what Sophia is going through after having experienced a few hours with Darius. For her, it’s an emotional rollercoaster of sorts as she isn’t the type to let anyone close. We also get a bigger view at what is happening to Rhi and other characters whose world is evolving. I am DYING to get the fully story on Rhi and Con. I highly recommend. **I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review

Smoldering Hunger is a great description for book eight of Donna Grant's Dark King's series. Dragon intense heat dictates the all encompassing attraction between the hero and heroine of this action filled romance. Fueled by past events their inevitable submission to their fate together takes readers on lots of twist and curves to acceptance. Multiple carry over plots from this series and interrelated series by this author make for bonus upon bonus and lots of fun. As the Dark King's series continues it is clear that seasoned writer Ms. Grant knows just how to keep her audience happy! *I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.* *While this book can be read as a stand alone your overall reading experience would be enhanced by reading the other works in this series.*

As always another great installment in the Dark Kings series. One cannot help but fall in love with a Dragon King and Sophie Martin is no exception. From the moment she meets Darius she is lost. She has been hurt in the past and is desperately trying to protect her heart. But each time she is with Darius she falls a little more. Now her life is in danger and he is vowing to protect her at any cost. Darius is drawn to Sophie as he has never been drawn to a woman. But he is trying to convince himself it is nothing but sexual, after all he has already found and lost his mate. it drove him into his mountain for many years. As Sophie is placed in the path of Ulrik thanks to his carelessness he finds that he cannot tolerate the thought of anyone hurting Sophie. Once the danger has past though he will leave her to the career she loves and safely out of danger. As always Donna Grant provides us with a steamy love story between a mortal and her King. Side stories in the novel are also great. Waiting anxiously to find out who is Rhi's king. Cannot wait for the next installment.

3.75 stars----SMOLDERING HUNGER is the eighth full length installment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult DARK KINGS paranormal/fantasy, romance series focusing on the Dragon Kings and the women they love. This is dragon shifter Darius, and Dr. Sophie Martin’s story line. SMOLDERING HUNGER can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and back story I recommend reading this series in order (especially the most recent installments) as the Dragon Kings are on the verge of war with the Dark Fae, and one of their own. SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. The Dark Fae and their King Taraeth, along with the Ulrik the Silver Dragon King and his uncle Mikkel have declared war on the Dragon Kings by exposing the dragon’s existence to humankind. The last wars between man and the world of the paranormal saw a great loss of life on all sides-but Ulrik wants revenge against King Constantine of the Dragon Kings; Mikkel wants to become King of the Silvers, and the Dark Fae want the Dragon’s hidden weapon, and to rule Scotland and the rest of the world. Told from several third person points of view SMOLDERING HUNGER follows the building but forbidden relationship between Darius and the sexy doctor who has caught both his heart and his soul. Darius believes he lost his mate hundreds of years earlier, but his attraction and desire for Sophie is beyond anything he could have imagined. Darius’s need for Sophie has placed her in the direct line of fire when Ulrik and the Dark Fae use Sophie as a means to exact revenge against Darius and Con. For readers who have not read the previous installments Donna Grant does an amazing job recapping the important issues and direction the series is heading. With the recent introduction of The Reapers -a group of Dark and Light Fae, selected by Death, to do her bidding-Donna has once again merged another spin off series with the Dark Kings bringing together a potential ally in the war against the Dark Fae. The Reapers are not harbingers of death, but are tasked with destroying the Light and Dark Fae who have crossed a line from which there is no return. The number of secondary and supporting characters is not as large as in previous story lines but there still remains a large ensemble cast. SMOLDERING HUNGER follows several developing and ongoing plotlines including Rhi and Balladyn, Rhi and her former Dragon lover; the potential battle between Ulrik and Mikkel; and Con’s deadly flirtation with the Light Fae queen. SMOLDERING HUNGER looks at another forbidden relationship between a Dragon King and his human mate. The premise is engaging but as the series develops new readers may have a difficult time catching up with the copious amount of building drama and intense but fragile relationships between King Constantine and his Dragon Kings. Again, I recommend reading the Dark Kings series in order. The characters are numerous, intense, energetic and passionate. The romance is emotional and hopeful; the happily ever after is but a glimmer for the future as conflict continues to batter the Dragon Kings and the women they love.

Another great addition to the Dark King Series. "Smothering Hunger" picks up right where the previous book, "Soul Scorched" left off. I'm going to take a minute to say that technically, you can read these books on their own, however, personally, I believe, you will get significantly better understanding of the larger picture of what is transpiring if you read the entire series. This being said, if you started reading the series here with SMOLDERING HUNGER, you will want to go back anyways to rad the previous stories. Donna, the author, continues to entice the readers with each page. The heroine, Sophie, is independant, smart and knows what she wants. While she has suffered in the past, she is ready to move forward. The hero, Darius is happy killing the Dark Fae yet is memorized by Sophie and while the physical attraction is evident, he can't help wonder if there might be more... Oh Rhi!!! This is another example of where Donna's writing skills excel... Rhi, while technically a secondary character, has develop a following which adores the character and can't wait to learn who her Dragon King is! SERIOUSLY Donna! You're messing with our EMOTIONS!!! The Reapers make more of an appearance in this installment and OMG, talk about the potential for a twist swirl Donna has caused! That's all I'm saying!! All and all ... the main arc of defeating the Dark Fae and Ulrik continues. It's now a matter of when and how. Narrator: Antony Ferguson continues to do a great job with the series, though there are a few mispronunciation with the character's name. Also, the way he does the females' voices sometimes comes across a bit nasally. Only a few more books left in the series....

As with all her Dark Kings Series, this is a can't put down read. I started and finished this book in one sitting. Each book in the series draws you in more and more. Can't wait till the next one. Also enjoyed her other series as well as they all fit together, but can be read as stand alone.

Donna Grant's vivid imagination knows no bounds! I am enchanted by the world and stories she weaves. They are all unique and just keep getting better and better! Not only is Darius and Sophie's story great but all the side stories that continue in each book are just as awesome! Something monumentous happens between Rhi and Balladyn and she will have some decisions to make! Let's just say you will be shocked, and it may change some things! Con, the King of the Dragon Kings, I just wanted to scream at as usual lol! I can't wait to find out what Donna has in store for us in the next book!
Dr. Sophie Martin moved to Scotland to run from her past. She has put her life on hold. She is wary with others and does not trust easily. She has given years of her life to her job. Helping and saving patients are her only priority and it takes her mind off her past hurts. That is until she meets a handsome stranger that makes her pulse race and for the first time in years wish for more.
Darius has held on to his anger and his past for centuries. When he is woken from his slumber because of the war between the Dragon Kings and the Fae, he is sent to protect Edinburgh. To his surprise he meets the vibrant Sophie Martin, and she awakens desires and hopes in him that he believed long-lost. Being with her, has put her on his enemies radar. He has vowed to keep her safe, but with trouble brewing all around them, he may lose what he just realized he can't live without.
