A rollicking rhyme for every dog lover!

"Get out your fiddle and play a sweet song.
Musical pups will love howling along.

There are so many wonderful things you can do
for the four-legged friend who's so loyal to you."

Funny and sweet, this rhyming ode to dogs reminds us to show our love every day-in small ways, in silly ways, in soft and warm and wise ways. With loose, active art that captures the fuzz and the motion in equal measure.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Miriam Chernick
Beginning with its catchy title, this rhyming read-aloud is full of suggestions for things to do with your dog. Options include playing music (while your pup howls), getting outside for swimming or skating, digging or playing fetch, hiking, or biking. Other suggestions are to ride in the car together or just hang out, all of which will result in your dog loving you enough to return the favor of a big smooch! The book's colorful illustrations (by Arthur Howard, illustrator of the Mr. Putter and Tabby series) depict boys and girls—some with red hair, others with glasses, but all of them dog-lovers—together with dogs of various breeds showing extreme loyalty to their kid owners. (My favorite illustration is a double-page spread showing three kids and a dog whizzing down a hill on their skateboards.) While the book's point of view is in the second person, on two occasions it pops out of this, which is a bit jarring. Otherwise, the writing flows nicely with rhymes to match the excitement of the kids and dogs in the illustrations. This will be an enjoyable read for dog owners and dog-wanters alike. PreS-Gr 2—A winning cast of fun-loving children cavorts with an assortment of equally engaging dogs in this rhyming tale. Describing how to show love to a favorite four-legged friend, the short, punchy lines beg to be read aloud, engaging listeners and moving the action right along. "Toss him a bone./Feed him some kibble./Or better yet, pizza./He'd sure like a nibble." The cartoon illustrations, rendered in black line and watercolors, pair perfectly with the text in their movement and energy and are sure to prompt many giggles. The pups' personalities come alive with the sparest of pen strokes. Sure to be well-loved and a little dog-eared itself, this book will combine perfectly with Emily Gravett's Dogs (S & S, 2010) for a surefire storyhour that will have kids howling.—Kathleen Finn, St. Francis Xavier School, Winooski, VT

GREAT book, especially for dog lovers!

I first saw this book at our public library. My 2 year old daughter loved it so much and we renewed it so many times, my husband and I ordered it for her and we still read it all the time! I have since bought it is a gift for other kids and it has been a huge hit!

    Great for dog lovers!

Cute pictures and story. Great for those who treat their dog as part of the family. It is the first book my son will sit through cover to cover.

    This is a dangerous

Dogs are living beings. They do not think like humans.
Dog do not like to be hugged or kissed. While some dogs will put up with such behaviour from humans, for a while, there are many who will not.
Encouraging a child to hug or kiss a dog is taking a serious chance that the cog will bite the child.
There are far better ways to interact with a dog. Play catch. Go for a walk.
Even the American Veterinary Assoc. calls this a dangerous book.

    The illustrations are very cute.
