Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In this slight story from the creators of Dora's Eggs, Smudge the dog is playing outside with his rabbit and mouse friends when a summer shower takes them by surprise. After a series of failed efforts to find shelter, Smudge remembers the narrow exit for the cat: " `It's easy,' said Smudge, as he poked his nose through the cat door. And it was easy until... he got stuck!" Oversize type adds emphasis. Sykes creates a humorous rapport between the dog of questionable ideas and his follower friends, but the story lacks oomph. Airy illustrations set the damp trio against simple backgrounds of flowers and raindrops, and the drawings' agile lines bring out the slapstick humor. While Smudge is a charming bumbler, all eagerness and big feet, readers' interest will likely last not much longer than the passing shower the book describes. Ages 3-7. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Jackie Hechtkopf
Smudge is a shaggy white mutt with two brown ears and a brown patch over his left eye. He loves playing in the sunshine with his rabbit friend Bounce and his mouse friend Nibble. But a few raindrops turn him into a frantic problem solver. How can Smudge and his friends get out of the rain when the front door is locked? They try building a tower out of flowerpots to climb through an open window, but come crashing back to the ground. Next, they all try to jam into Bounce's small rabbit hutch. Finally, with a push from his friends, Smudge squeezes through a cat door, only to realize that the short summer shower has ended. Preschoolers will enjoy the antics and cute expressions of this silly doggy. They might even learn that a few raindrops in summer are no reason for great alarm. Jane Chapman's watercolor illustrations are delightfully playful. A cheerful romp for little ones.
School Library Journal
PreS-An appealing book for young listeners because of its uncomplicated story; lively colors; and friendly, bouncy dog and his rabbit and mouse playmates. Poor Smudge! When rain interferes with his outdoor romping, he tries to get inside. When he finally gets in, it stops and he finds himself in the predicament of how to get out. The nonthreatening suspense of several unsuccessful attempts makes for a picture book paced just right for preschoolers. The colorful, uncluttered illustrations set against white are a good match for the story. A sweet British import.-Christy Norris Blanchette, Valley Cottage Library, NY
