Children's Literature
In just a very few words per double page we follow Slimy Snail, a charming fellow with an expressive but realistic face, on a walk one morning. Concepts of relative sizes, of up, through, into, over, down as well as descriptive words like steep, gloomy, high and narrow are introduced as snail journeys into a cave to sleep. In just ten close-up scenes we accompany Slimy on his adventure, getting emotionally involved as he travels through a dark tunnel, peers around thick plant trunks, hangs precariously from a thin bridge, gets stuck in an arch, etc. The final scene reveals that the trek was simply along a rather short path across the corner of a garden. The pages are of extra-heavy paper to withstand multiple turnings by fingers just graduating from board books. 2000, Crown/Random House, $9.95. Ages 2 to 6. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
