Children's Literature - Cindy Schofield
Warning! This is not a book for the faint of heart! Since more than just poisonous snakes are described, this book could have been titled "Slithering Killers." Graphic explanations and clearly labeled photographs explain how venomous snakes and constrictors kill and consume their prey. Jackson begins by writing about the fangs, venom, and physiological mechanics of killer snakes. Then he offers tips about the warnings snakes give before biting, and strategies for surviving snake attacks. Highlighted words throughout the book are defined in a glossary. There is a short summary of things to consider when contemplating taking on the responsibilities of a pet snake. A table of contents and index provide access to the contents. While this is a lower level reading book, the information presented could be scary for very young readers, though some will be absolutely fascinated. The subject matter will interest some older children, though easy to read. Reviewer: Cindy Schofield
