It was the hot, lazy dog days of summer when three best friends, Roxie, Sophie, and Brownie were resting in the grass. They were lying on their backs, watching the soft white clouds float through the air.
"I think that cloud looks like a bone," stated Roxie.
"Yeah, and look over there, that cloud looks like a new blanket," Sophie added.
"Wow, look at that cloud," said Brownie.
"It looks just like a bicycle."
"I can ride really fast," Brownie said, "just like a jet plane."
"Yeah, I can ride really fast," stated Roxie, "just like a flying bird."
"But I can ride even faster than that," Sophie said, "just like a speeding car!"
"Hey, why don't we have a race to see who really is the fastest," suggested Sophie. So the three friends agreed to meet the next morning for a bike race.
Roxie stopped by Fox's house and told Fox and his friends about the race.
Sophie stopped by Rabbit's house and told Rabbit and his friends about the race.
Brownie stopped by Cat's house and told Cat and his friends about the race.
Early the next morning, everyone gathered at the starting line to see who was going to win. Fox yelled, "Get ready, get set, go!" and the three friends were off!
For several minutes, everyone was side by side, but Brownie started pulling ahead of Roxie and Sophie. All of a sudden, Brownie's chain came off his bike, causing his bike to come to a stop. "My bike's broken!" yelled Brownie to Roxie and Sophie as they caught up with him. Roxie and Sophie sped past Brownie and didn't even stop!
Brownie sat down on the edge of the road, and he started to cry. Now he was out of the race and had a broken bike too. Out of the air came a voice, "Why are you crying?" Brownie looked up to see Snake hanging from a tree.
"My chain broke on my bike, and now I'm out of the race," Brownie told Snake.
"Well, maybe I can help," Snake said. Snake climbed down from the tree and crawled over to Brownie's bike. He gently placed the end of his tail into his mouth and made himself into an O, forming a circle. He then placed himself on Brownie's bike where the broken chain had been. Brownie was off and riding his bike again!
