All Annabel wants is a pet of her own. It doesn't have to be a prizewinner, like her best friend's golden retriever--just a real, live animal. But Annabel's dad's allergies make him sneeze at everything--dogs, cats, even parakeets. So how about a snake? This funny first novel is about secrets, friends, and a snake called Wilfred that anyone could learn to love.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-5-- Annabel's father is allergic to any animal with fur, hair , or feathers. It's a most unfortunate situation for Annabel, who desperately wants a pet; the solution seems to be Wilfred, a green grass snake who isn't slimy, is quite friendly, and who doesn't mind being held or wearing a pink satin ribbon. While the plot is somewhat predictable, Annabel is a cheery, cheeky, independent young lady with enough chutzpah to stick out her tongue at a rather puffed-up Persian cat owner who also happens to be in the vet's office. A minor conflict develops between Annabel and her friend Charlotte, who doesn't like snakes. This is reconciled at the end in a delightfully funny game of truth or dare. Scientific information about snakes is presented accurately as Annabel researches snakes in her encyclopedia and library books. Annabel's character, and indeed Carter's depiction of her, are reminiscent of Pippi Longstocking. A satisfying story that will likely send children into their backyards with jars searching for green grass snakes of their own. --Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA
