Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Several colorful, crawling snakes slither around Jeff Corwin's neck, arms, and head on the cover of this interesting and informative book. Right up front, Jeff Corwin explains that all snakes should not be considered dangerous or scary or slimy, but they need to be respected. Text consists of well-worded sentences with crisp, intriguing verbs. Descriptions of snakes leave the reader with a clear image. Basic information about the cold-blooded creatures is available and information specific to certain kinds of snakes is added. Garter snakes, cobras, and coral snakes, as well as mambas, anacondas, and rattlesnakes get attention. Especially interesting is the section explaining how to look at colors of snakes to ascertain which ones are poisonous. Information about egg laying snakes and those that give have live births is also entertaining. One to three pages of text about each kind of snake keeps information succinct and adds to the ease of comprehension. Sharp photos feature close-ups of the snakes and the photos closely match the text. This book makes an excellent supplement to science lessons and readers will find it interesting enough to pick it up on their own. As part of the "All Aboard Reading" series in the Station Stop 3 set, longer text and harder words challenge independent readers. A list of titles for Station Stop 1, Station Stop 2, and other Station Stop 3 books is included. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
