Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As part of the emergent reader series, "All About Pets," Snakes offers young animal lovers an opportunity to learn more about snakes and their basic care. Many young children are interested in a wide variety of animals, and this series, which includes books about everything from snakes to dogs to guinea pigs, gives toddlers and early readers a chance to explore animals on an individual level. Snakes gives young reptile lovers a chance to learn what snakes are all about. While these books do not provide enough detail to properly care for a snake, they do give readers a quick view of snakes' basic needs. The descriptive pages and photographs also provide enough visual images to keep a child's interest. The use of simple sentences, one per page, accompanied by a photograph, really makes this book ideal for very early readers. For those children who then find themselves clamoring for more information about snakes or other reptiles, there is a reference section at the back of the book that includes library resources as well as web sites that can provide greater detail. Also included is a glossary, which reviews the basic words covered in the text. This book is well suited to very early readers or even an attentive toddler.
