Overview

From the coauthor of Chris Kyle’s #1 New York Times bestseller, American Sniper: In direct defiance of the president’s orders, Navy Master Chief Gil Shannon, one of America’s most lethal SEAL snipers, launches a bold mission comprised of SEAL Team Six and Delta Force fighters to free a captured female helicopter pilot being held by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.

The president is afraid a botched rescue could jeopardize US foreign policy as well as end his presidency. But once the special ops community learns that one of their own—the first female helicopter pilot of the Army’s elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR)—is being held and brutally mistreated, there is no executive order strong enough to stop them from attempting to rescue her.

This fast-paced, action-packed thriller with incredibly realistic and blistering battles introduces a new American hero, Gil Shannon, whose iron will and expertise with the .308 Remington Modular sniper rifle will spell the difference between freedom and an ignoble death for America’s female POW.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Sniper Elite is a gripping, fast paced adventure. Packed with action, it takes the reader into the shadow world of real military operations. A great read - don't miss it!"

“Finally a military novel that pays attention to detail, and tells a great story, rarely do the two go together. Sniper Elite gets it right. Lace up your boots tight because you're about to move out, and learn what it's like to be a SEAL sniper."

When a female helicopter pilot is captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan, veteran Navy SEAL Gil Shannon is sent to rescue her. McEwen (coauthor, American Sniper) creates physical, emotional, and bureaucratic obstacles for his hero to overcome, while providing unobtrusive background to make this endless conflict fathomable. Although this thriller is drenched in macho posturing, the female characters are vivid and the Afghan loyalists sympathetic. Brian Hutchinson handles the numerous characters with great skill, giving one a voice similar to that of Sam Shepard to emphasize his rugged manliness. VERDICT Recommended for those interested in contemporary war fiction as well as those wishing to understand Afghanistan better.—Michael Adams, CUNY Graduate Ctr. Lib., New York
