Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton
Sandra Boynton
Cartoonist/author Sandra Boynton infuses her books with a sense of joy, silliness, and -- well, lots of farm animals. With her fun board books, the woman famous for the adults' mantra "Don't Let the Turkeys Get You Down" has become a natural favorite for toddlers.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

    Our Favorite

I have 3 children: ages 3, 7, and 9 and I'm the kind of mom who reads to them on most nights. I got this book 9 years ago when my eldest was an infant. This is far and away our favorite book for bedtime and it is well worn.

Its not meant as a primer for Harvard!

To the reviewer that said this is a dissappointment I feel sorry for his/her child. What are you reading at bedtime, 'Catcher in the Rye'? She/he is 2. There is no need to prime them for college just yet. Let them enjoy (as well as yourself) some of the great things about childhood and not worry about the serious stuff yet. You need to put down the psycho - babble child raising book and lighten up. And, in case you are wondering, I do read to my kids (all 4 of them) every night. We generally read this as the 'finale' to the other stories they pick out, but there are nights that a quick book is all we have time for. That is when this one is perfect since each them can pick their own story and it doesn't take me an hour to read.

    Love this book!

My 15mth old loves this book! This is always our last book we read before bedtime. Once we sing Zoodle lullaby he knows its time for bed and doesn't resist. Our whole family has memorized all of the words. He also will sit in his room and 'read' it by himself. We love all of Sandra Boynton's books, but this is the best!

    Love the book

The board book is funny and hysterical; great for bedtime reading, especially for toddlers who are resisting going to bed and learning a sense of irony. They get prompted to read parts of the book (i.e. words printed in red "But I'm not tired"), giving them a chance to participate in the reading. My son got this book a few years ago as a gift and it was such a hit I went online and found another version of the book that includes a music CD that plays all the songs in this book plus more, but the pages in that book are not board and can tear, so beware. Great for play and bedtime. I bought several copies of the version with CD and gave them out for birthday presents. I ordered this copy for a friend in England who has a toddler and newborn.

    very cute book

My son picks this book whenever we need short stories at bedtime - like when we are short on time. He now knows the difference between short books and long books. He loves the silly songs (we always sing the snoozers one) and does all the 'now you say' parts and the noises on the snoring story. It's also great for little ones beginning to memorize all their stories - my son loves to read these to us.

Cute stories, cute characters, and flexible read time!

It should be obvious from the title that these are 'Short Short Stories' -- but sometimes that's exactly what a tired toddler needs, just a few quick verses before she falls asleep in your lap. Feeling more active? Read more stories! The flexibility of being able to pick more or less little ditties means it's great for whatever mood the little princess is in. And Boynton's cute characters and stories are very enjoyable for small readers -- my daughter will pick it up and 'read' it herself even when it's not bedtime. Definitely a great addition to any two-year-old's bookshelf!

    Book for kids?

I bought this book for my 2 year old. It is a book in name only. It supposedly contains 7 bedtime stories. It actually contains 7 short poems containing 20-80 words each. It's basically 7 double pages since each poem takes up both sides of an open page. The pictures are scant, though it's the pictures that bring a book alive for a 2 year old. Each 'story' takes 2 minutes or less to read. If you want your child to feel read to every night, look elswhere. These stories don't even constitute a sound bite in my book so Boynton is now on my 'to be avoided' list. If you are very short on time and want something you can read really quickly, then this might work for you. Of course if that's the case, why bother? Definitely not recommended.

    Now a favorite

My daughter is almost two-years-old and this book caught her imagination a few months ago. Although it is really seven verses, even saying short twice doesn't make them stories. Each 'story' is too short to consider reading just one story at a sitting. But who would want to? This book is fun, there are clever verses about cute characters. There's even a silly bedtime song and the illustrations are...well...they are Boynton. Need I say more?

Fabulous bedtime fun for kids & parents

I've read this to my son since he was 3 months old. He thinks each of the stories are funny. We like it because from one book, we can pick 2-3 stories to read before bed that are very short and cute. Each one is about going to sleep and have funny little rhymes.

    Favorite Author

I bought this book as gifts for my sister's two sets of grandchildren. Their parents were as excited as the children because Sandra Boynton is one of their favorite authors. Both sets of parents said the kids love hearing the stories at bedtime. Funny stories just short enough for infants and toddlers along with humorous pictures make this book a winner.
