Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
The "Ridge Riders" series of books focuses on the adventures of a group of kids who race mountain bikes. They are designed to interest reluctant readers by combining elements from traditional and graphic novels. Extensively illustrated with comic book bubbles for all spoken words, the books also include segments of text in traditional paragraphs. The kids cannot ride their bikes on Westridge Hill because it is covered with snow. Dozy finds an old pair of sneakers and an old skateboard, takes the wheels off of the skateboard and nails the sneakers onto it to make a snowboard. The three other boys in the group follow his example, and son they are sailing down Westridge Hill. Fiona had to help her Dad and shows up later with her skis. Fiona is blamed for the accidents and broken boards that result from the boys trying to keep up with her skiing. Things get really complicated with the boys put bolts on their bike tires to facilitate riding their bikes in the snow. Parents and librarians should be aware that the series falls down in attempting to include a girl in the group. She is always singled out in some way that perpetuates a gender stereotype. The series would be more successful if the focus remained on the boys exclusively.
