Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The first four titles in the World Wildlife Fund books give readers a glimpse of animals in their natural habitats. The books are short and offer little in the way of hard facts, but each names a few simple characteristics of that animal's life. Cherry's pictures are semirealistic; her renditions of the animals and landscapes will help youngsters understand the lush forests or icy seas where these creatures live. Many of the animals smile out at readers, and all are presented as cuddly creatures. The value of these books is to emphasize species that are on the endangered list, and to that end, a percentage of the profits from each books goes to the WWF. Ages 1-4. (September)
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Known for her concerns regarding nature and the environment, Lynne Cherry has developed a series of board books to introduce very young children to endangered species. This title shows an expressive baby snow leopard high in the cold mountain outcroppings, learning how to survive from his mother. Also in the "First Wonders of Nature" series are Grizzly Bear, Orangutan, and Seal.
School Library Journal
PreS Cursory introductions to some of the world's endangered species. Although the colorful, finely detailed illustrations will help to acquaint children with the habitats and physical characteristics of the animal subjects, the text is slight in content and stilted in style. It is commendable, even vital, to introduce young children to the beauty of the natural world, but these books fall short of that intent. The visual appeal of the illustrations does not compensate enough for the texts, which fail to generate interest or feeling for the subjects. Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie, Oreg.
