The Snow Leopard

( 9 )

Overview

When Matthiessen went to Nepal to study the Himalayan blue sheep and, possibly, to glimpse the rare and beautiful snow leopard, he undertook his five-week trek as winter snows were sweeping into the high passes. This is a radiant and deeply moving account of a "true pilgrimage, a journey of the heart."

Without doubt the most beautiful book I have ever read

In the world of today, if one needs something to grow from, this is the foundation waiting to be built upon. 'The Snow Leopard' is no 'Celestine Prophecy' or 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.' It is much more. His personal account, which comes in the form of his daily diary, takes us across the illusory bridge that seperates us from the rest of the planet and onto the level playing field of all other living things. For all of us, a must read.

The Snow leopard by Peter Matthiessen

In short, my favorite book. Peter does a wonderful job combining travel and adventure with deep reflection and introspection of a region. He really connects the culture and philosophy. His writting is poetic and alluring even when he is being technical. I have read the book several times and have given it to many friends. If you like to travel and like philosophy or spirituality this is a must read. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Even as an intro to spirituality or someone who would enjoy a great adventure. Peter Mattiessen has managed to make this readable to a wide variety of interests.

Snow Leopard is Beautifully Written and Satisfying

Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard is a beautifully woven story about his own spiritual journey into the Himalyas. In search of the elusive snow leopard, Matthiessen not only learns about the natural environment of Tibet, but he also learns about himself. I reccomend this book to any discerning reader.

    Remarkable Journey

This book is an account of a journey in which the author becomes part of a landscape which is both beautiful and harsh. Matthiessen is not afraid to share both his reactions to this landscape, and the path he finds his spirit taking at the same time. We share his difficult days and those in which he can scarcely contain his joy with his surroundings. His prose is stunning in its simplicity, yet at the same time it is powerfully descriptive. In the 25 years I have been reading travel narratives, and books about the Himalaya in particular, I have not read a better book than this.

Great read for an introduction to the spirit of the buddist calling and lifestyles, mountain climbing, and Tibet

The book is a mountain travelers journal that ends up being a classic allegory for the challenges of the trail, human relationships, and the search for meaning in life. I am glad that I read it. Wish I had done so long ago.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    Quietly Inspiring

This is one of my favorite books. It has a quiet beauty to it like the landscape it describes. It is that could easily be cross classified - nature, self-improvement, travel...probably others as well. The book was cathartic and religious without being overwhelming. It was exactly what was needed.
