Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Baumann
Simi and Siri, two young snow leopards, learn to survive in a harsh mountainous region in Asia. Simi, the male cub, is born smaller than his sister but is able to gain strength from his mother. She nurses him and teaches both cubs how to survive in one of the world's most unforgiving regions. The cubs learn to hunt wild game and survive in a cave during a blizzard. While hunting, danger strikes in the form of an avalanche and separates Simi from his mother and sister. He is buried and must dig himself out to survive. Not being able to tell if he is up or down, Simi scrambles to the surface and can finally breathe. Freed from the avalanche, Simi searches desperately for his mother and sister. This is an extremely exciting story infused with much factual information about the little-known snow leopard. Engaging watercolor illustrations complement the harsh beauty of the snow leopard's habitat. An informational page at the end of the book provides readers many interesting facts about snow leopards. This is a picture book for all elementary aged students and would make a good read-aloud for story hour. It would also be useful for art teachers demonstrating watercolor technique and in collaborative classroom projects. Reviewer: Nancy Baumann

K-Gr 3-This picture book combines fact with fiction as the author presents the life of two young snow leopards. The siblings' mountain terrain is harsh and their daily forays into the ice and snow make hunting especially challenging. On one particular venture with their mother, Simi is lost in an avalanche. Alone and exhausted, he is able to drag himself to safety, but worries about how he'll ever locate his family. Siri continues to look for her brother, but a hunter's trap impedes her search. Eventually, they are reunited. This story is filled with details of the animals' existence, and its lovely, soft-focus artwork depicting their home and environment are lively and dramatic. An informative endnote gives additional facts about this endangered species.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Brother and sister snow leopards Simi and Siri are born moments apart, but the male cub Simi is born small and weak. Determined to survive, Simi learns to keep up with his heartier sister and use his small size to his advantage. However, caught in an avalanche, Simi realizes that he's no match for nature's elements and is separated from his mother and sister; with luck and a human's help the siblings are reunited. Muted watercolor full-page illustrations playfully chronicle the cubs' development, separation and reunion, and the illustrations' fine details make this text suitable for close-up independent or one-on-one reading. Despite featuring a relatively simple and easy-to-follow storyline, this text, which is translated from French, is wordy and the language used lacks energy, especially in the supposedly tense moments of the siblings' separation. A dense one-page fact-based afterword provides details about snow leopards and reminds readers of the importance of protecting this endangered species. (Picture book. 4-7)
