Overview

Mischka Gallo, a proud Roma woman, knows horses, dancing, and travel. Every day since her birth, she and her extended family have been on the road in their vardo wagons meandering through Poland and Germany. She learned early to ignore the taunts and insults of all those who call her people "Gypsies" and do not understand their close-knit society and way of life.

Pauline "Pippi" Stanek has lived a settled life in a small German town along the eastern border of Poland and Germany. In her mid-teens, she meets Mischka and her family through her brother, Emil Stanek, a World War I soldier who went AWOL and was adopted by Mischka's troupe. Mischka and Pippi become fast friends, and they keep in touch over the years. But then, the Second World War heats up, and all of Europe is in turmoil. Men are conscripted into the Axis or the Allied armies, "undesirables" are turned over to slave labor camps, and with every day that passes, the danger for Mischka, Emil, and their families increases. The Nazi forces will not stop until they've rounded up and destroyed every Gypsy, Jew, dissident, and homosexual. On the run and separated from her family, Mischka can hardly comprehend the obstacles that face her. When she is captured, she must use all her wits just to stay alive. Can Mischka survive through the hell of the war in Europe and find her family?

In a world beset by war, two women on either side of the conflagration breach the divide - and save one another. Snow Moon Rising is a stunning novel of two women's enduring love and friendship across family, clan, and cultural barriers. It's a novel of desperation and honor, hope and fear at a time when the world was split into a million pieces.

Editorial Reviews

Books To Watch Out For - Suzanne Corson
Spanning from World War I through the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, Snow Moon Rising follows Mischka Gallo and her Roma family…from Poland in 1918 to New York City in 1989. [The novel] brings the traditions and tragedies of the Roma to life as well as provides a look at their struggles as immigrants in the United States. The author has done her homework, and her use of flashback, symbolism, and sociopolitical observation serve this engaging novel well.
OUT in Jersey - Ruth Sims
Author Lori L. Lake has created something rare with Snow Moon Rising: a boldly written, meticulously researched book that will take your soul, wring it dry, make you cry, and make you think. Snow Moon Rising covers 70 years in the life of Mischka Gallo, a Polish Roma or Gypsy, from the free but hard life of the traveling caravan through the manmade hell of a Nazi work camp, to life as a refugee in New York without even a name that is her own, to coming together with her one true love.
JustAboutWrite.com - Nann Dunne
Snow Moon Rising provides nail-biting action, strong emotional impact, and a judicious balance of suspense and breathing space. People of older generations will remember the era and relate closely to it, but Snow Moon Rising should appeal to anyone with an appreciation of history, belief in the sustaining power of love, and a vested interest in tearing down the walls of prejudice.
StoryCircleBookReviews.org - Story Circle
Many fictional stories are based on the atrocities of Hitler's regime, but Lori L. Lake uses an uncommon perspective, telling the story from the Roma and German point of view, and then adding a refreshing twist... Lake succeeds in writing an emotionally charged, action-packed, and authentic story. Her tight, crisp narrative flows seamlessly as Mishka, at eighty, recounts her life's experiences.

    Double Draft: INTRO by Thrackerzod

Calvin threw himself on the bed. Hobbes stretched out next to him. "Have you ever noticed how time flies when you're having fun, but when you look back on what you've done, you realize, 'That wasn't fun at all! It was like throwing bananas from a tree!' Soon enough, it's dark and you have to go to bed!" Hobbes groaned, sad that Calvin's mom wasn't doing laundry. "I still have banana in my fur."
"But that G.R.O.S.S meeting was so fun! Imagine Susie, she has bananas in her hair and her coat!" Hobbes laughed. "True, true. But I would enjoy a tuna sandwich in my fur, rather than banana."
"CALVIN! BEDTIME!" Calvin's mom called. Calvin, who was exhausted, fell asleep.

Pinkie bounced around. "Go Gummy, it's your birthday! Go Gummy, it's your birthday!" Everypony was having fun at Pinkie's Gigantic Gummy Gumbubble Party, but as the party ended and even Sweetie Belle, who was a natural party animal and sang most of the solos, was leaning and striving to keep her eyes open, everypony left. Man, was Pinkie tired. She took Gummy, and collapsed on the bed.

Mario flew through the observatory, his white gloves glowing red while he aimed. Past the Engine Room, up to the Garden, over the Kitchen, down to the bedroom, swerve over the Terrace, and back to Rosalina. "Are you ready to fly to the center of the universe?" Mario nodded. "Go, Mario. The fate of the universe is in your hands." As she blasted him away, Mario fell asleep.

There are many more, my friends. If I showed them all, my "characters remaining" thing would say -600!
